Smokin Gun

I figgered I try here ran out of resouces tryin' to I.D. this Rev. It's an 1862 Colt Pocket Police .36 rebated clyinder, SN 96XXX.
SN all mtachin' on Barrel under loadin' lever, bbl.assy. at frame,Triggerguard, frame grip by screw, cylinder between cones. And 36 on left side of triggerguard.
Top of barrel ~ADDRESS SAM L COLT HARTFORD CONN.~
Is pretty old and may have been sittin' loaded with all 5, only one area that has some medium pitting lines up with the frame when hammer is set on safety pin between chambers. No other markings went over it with an eyeglass...shows no signs of defarbing or removed metal...site is a small rounded button type...grips are glued together with a substance I have not seen simular to wood glue but not. My pic ain't great but here it is...any info would be helpful..I can't find any serialization within this number range. Been searchin' the net for info.
Thanks in advance,

The glue is probably hide glue, made from animal hooves boiled down.

I'm not sure what I can tell you about this except for the fact that I have one of these, purchased new, by my G/G/Grandfather in the 1860s.

Mine's a 43xxx number w/~80% blue and factory Ivory Stocks.  Like your's, mine has Brass Grip Frame/Trigger Guard.  I doesn't appear that it was ever Silver plated as some were.

From what I've seen, it seems more of these have survived in Good + -> Exc. condition than others such as martial models.

My guess is it's probably because they were probably carried less and in less hostile environments?  (Mine probably spent the bulk of its life in a desk drawer)

Mine has a New York address on it and I understand that Harford address guns are rarer and more sought after.

Original Pocket Police serial numbers ran from 1 through 47000.  2nd Gens from 48000 through 57300.  96XXX is high for either of these.  Just to clarify the SN locations.  Are they on the barrel, frame, backstrap, triggergurad, cylinder, arbor, and wedge?  There should only be one SN stamped on the barrel at the flat where the barrel meets the frame, not under the loading lever.

Smokin,

Could you have included one too many "x"s in your description?

If your piece is a 96xx gun, then that would fit right in...

Yep, should have two serial numbers, one on the bottom of the frame and another right above it, stamped on the barrel assembly.  They should be identical numbers and only ~1/8" apart.
