I don't recall seeing this posted before so I thought I'd pass it along.

I have a 1953 Lyman Ideal Handbook, #39.  This was Lyman/Ideal's 75th anniversary edition.  In the back of this handbook is a reprint of a very early (but undated) Ideal handbook.  This reprint is about 60 pages long and chock full of facinating information.  I would guess this was from the late 1880s.  It lists the ".50-95 Winchester and Colt's" bullet (solid) as 340gr, 1:16 with a diameter of .512".  Under rate of twist it lists both the .50-95 and .50-110 Winchester as 1 turn in 60".

Elsewhere in the text under a discussion on recommnded powders it states that "F.G. is the size suitable for use in the .50-95 Express, .45-70 Government, .45-60 and .40-60 cartridges".

I have also seen vintage ammo boxes from the period with the same recommendation for Fg as the granulation to use.  Good info.  Thanks for posting it. :)
