Setting up a new Gun Cart

I'm going to be setting up a new gun cart like the one in the picture.  It's going to be a little pricey, but it'll be a good attention getter.  I may have to cut and hem up a couple holes in the top so's my long guns can stand upright in the back (or front?).  I have a lead on the three liter oak barrel for water to be added to the side.  I'm thinking about having a couple of arrows stinking out of it from the Indian attack, just before the shoot and I think a sign "OREGON OR BUST" is a definite necessity!

Pictures I've seen of the covered wagons often show the cover not extending all the way to the front. If you set it up that way you could put your guns up front (where the driver would sit if you could find one small enough) without cutting the top.

The only thing is you won't have a place to sit on your wagon. I made a cart with no seat and have regretted it!

Thank you for bringing up the seat part.  I think I can get around that by taking alone one of those canvas/wood folding camp stools.  That'll fit in the wagon and not take up a whole bunch of room.  The only other thing that goes in the wagon will be my Winchester ammo box... a small cooler and lunch!  From what I understand...long guns must be carried upright on the carts and they can't be carried in the horizontal position.  I might be able to attach some kind of rack to each side for my long guns?  I'll work this problem before I start cutting holes in the top.

And you got to remember what you are hauling it around with.  Don't think it will fit in a VW....... ;)

Yer absolutely right on that!  It won't fit in my bug, but it'll fit on it.  I have two choices here.  1.  Put the back wheels of the wagon between my back bumper and the body work and bungy cord it in place...after the canvas top has been removed.  2.  Get a VW roof rack...remove the canvas top and put it up there.  I can fold up the canvas top and put that and the bows in the trunk.  It's going to take a little doing to set it up and break it down, but that's ok.  I am thinking again about putting long gun racks on each side so they can be carted in the upright position...rather than cut an hem a couple of holes in the top.  It is my understanding that carting long guns in the horizontal position is a no-no.

AK, why do you think horizonal carry is a no-no?
Could it be that folks don't want to be swept by your guns?
Could it be that sweeping someone could get you a stage or match DQ?
Or possibly not invited back to that range or club..........

Think about it... I don't want ANY gun pointed my way!

Sleep:  I have heard two things on horizontal gun carting.  I have heard that on some ranges it's ok, but it is not on others.  Having spent 24 years in the Army I know that you NEVER want the muzzle of that weapon pointing at anyone while you are carrying it.  The standard rule on Army rifle ranges is "Keep that weapon up and down range!"  I was told by a couple of people that horizontal gun carting was ok, but I had my doubts about it.  So if I put that Radio Flyer gun cart together the long gun racks will be on either side and the muzzles will be pointing straight up.

You need a couple of those "through the head" arrows like comedians use   ;D  In one side and out the other !!!

TAK, if you have not bought yer fliver yet, consider one of the Chink Radio Flyer wagons with the fat pneumatic tires.  They roll a lot easier and are lower to the ground.
They have a wood body model that I used.  A lot easier to mount the vertical gun rack.  Mine folds down for transportation.
I have a wood ammo box in the front that doubles as a seat.
Skip the conestoga canopy.  Being in the Northwest, get an umbrella/flag holder and attach to the back of the VERTICAL gun holder and pick up a cowboy compatible umbrella.  I did.   Never have used it.  Thrown my coat over the long guns a couple times.
Check out McLendon's in Woodyville for the cart.
Put some tire sealant in the tires before ya pumps them up.
What more can I say.  I live here in the great North Left and have done dat.

Willie:  Thanks for the tip on the Chink Wagon...but I still want the covered wagon top on it. This'll make a statement!  I can construct a couple long gun racks that hang on each side and are removeable for transporting.  I'll have to transport the cart on top of my VW Bug, but that's no problem.  I'll go to McLendon's and see what they have in the "wagon department" and take it from there.  This is not a now thing.  This is more, or less down the road a ways.

Rapaho Kid,
Think about the #29 Radio Flyer.  It's the wood body cargo wagon, and is available from just bout anyplace.  In fact, Wally World has 'em online for about $109.  Not cheap, but...
Check 'em out online.  I didn't see a conestoga type canopy but did see a nifty little umbrella.  I put this on my birthday wishlist.  Been doin this a long time and have never had a gun cart, but my last shoot, carrying two sets of guns, just got to me.  Think I'll build a little upright rack to fit my long guns, and figure the weight of ammo boxes in the bed will stabilize the whole thing.  Good idea about the tire sealant Willie.  I probably would have thought about that when I got my first flat!
