You problem with the patterns is probably those fiber wads. Modern shotguns are built for plastic wads. I cannot see inside the shotgun when it is going "BOOM!" but I suspect that the longer forcing cones of the modern shotgun gives the fiber wads more of a chance to get all cattywampus, allowing that gas to get into the shot column. Try seating a plastic wad on top of your overpowder wad. I like the Claybuster copy of the Winchester Red Wad.

Keep the 85 grain load the same and use some BP shot buffer.  About one 44-40 shell full should sift down among the buckshot just fine.  I use an old electric toothbrush for this.  It'll  keep the shot more round.  I also like to use a tyvek wrap around the buckshot.  It keeps the outer shot from scrubbing against the barrel walls.

The shot buffer is inbound from BPI, but I gotta ask.....how the heck do you wrap the buckshot in Tyvek?!?  I'm afraid some photos are in order on this one.....   ???

I think he's referring to making a 12 ga. folded end tube, then putting in the shot and powder.  Kinda like one of those coin tube "wrappers" only made of Tyvek, a new synthetic material.  They also wrap houses with it for better insulation.

I don't know what pre-1900 Tyvek would look like, however.  ::)

;D ;D ;D
