Converting zipper chaps to chap snaps, what do I need??

Chap snaps, size (½ or ¾ ) and how many? I was thinking 3 to 4 of the ½ in ones.

Conchos, size and how many?  Once again 3 to 4 of maybe 1 or 1 ½.

What size punch to cut hole in leather to accept Concho?  Don't have a clue.

I figured that I would have to line up the chaps with the zipper closed to get an idea of where to place the Conchos and chap snaps.  Than punch hole for Concho to go through and sow leather in to hold chap snaps on.  After this I can check for fit and remove the zipper that is there now.

Any info on what is needed to do this right would be great as I have not got a clue.

Thanks for your help.

JR, there are a lot of things we would need to know to give you an opinion on the chaps.
Some shotgun chaps with zippers are made fairly tight around the leg and might not leave you with enough material to get a nice fit.
The conchos and snaps are pretty much up to you,or whatever looks best to your eye.
Tandy leatherworks has a few different patterns for building new chaps but, converting a set will be an adventure I am sure.
At any rate , good luck and I hope they turn out well.  Gun Butcher
