new guy looking for advice on a remington cap and ball with out going broke

what brands are good and who's got'em cheap

You ought to try to handle a couple of different makers. The Piettas are cheapest but also the heaviest built and IMHO the clunkiest to weild. Those with big hands will like them the best as the grips are the widest. The Euroarms are the lightest framed and smallest grips (also narrower grips). The Uberti is inbetween. The Uberti is the only one with a FUNCTIONAL mainspring tension screw. I was able to adjust my two Uberti mainsprings to a tee by merely backing the mainspring tensionscrew all the way aout and then back in to 3/4 turn of contact with the spring. Nice lighter hammer pull with out blowback and cap jams. I own Ubertis and Euro remmies only.

mentioned in your other thread the Cabela's Pietta 58 .... About as inexpensive as you will find NIB.
Pietta does a good job these days and the gun will be quite serviceable.

You might follow some Classifieds and find a Uberti or Euroarms.....

But (and I have no dog in the fight ) if I were looking ,here is good deal

The gun, an R&D Cylinder, two Percussion cylinders, and a belt, holster & cyl. pouch.
Compair that to about $225 for the gun, $240 the R&D the Percussion cylinders run about $50 each and the leather might be another $100.

it's like two guns in one

I'd say that is a fair deal. I have basically the same thing I pieced together for $436. I have two cylinder holsters instead of one and my gun belt does not have loops. I have the same holster but no soft case. I'd say the cartridge loops is worth the $54 for an even $500. In pic below, however, I did not add cost od BP equipment, flask and guncase.

Yeah I thought so too, The Checker Grips and the Case Frame might add appeal too.
...yours is good to.... But yours is not for sale, is it ?

I've owned the weapon sold by cabela's I liked the one I had (except the grips) any where to pick one alittle cheaper than cabela's

and which one has better balance the 5 1/2 or 8 inch barrel

There is a Cabelas '58 ( ie. Pietta ) on the SASS clasifieds right now. 5 1/2 in. barrel. $ 175.00 Just posted up this evening.

Thas the one I would get! Then you could get a conversion cylinder and PARTS if needed!

I agree with that there Wofgang dude , it is a great pistol to begin with or finish with . I really have enjoyed mine , especially the barrel length . It just screams GUN FIGHTER !!!!

The R & D conversion cylinder is definately a drop in fit too on mine . Nice to have the option when I feel lazy and want to just shoot cartridges .

This particular version of the Remington is a natural for that and is mighty handsome especially fixed up a little.
Prbably one of the best buys on the market , used or new . Pietta done good with this model and there price . Trigger pull will probably need just a little work , mine did , but not much and certainly shootable right out of the box

The only complaint I have is the loading lever catch is not dovetailed so there aint no getting the cylinder pin out . No biggy , you get what you pay for I guess .

That's funny Swardboy ,

you aint gonna break no Colt , easilly , and I have NEVER lost a wedge ( flange you call it ? ) . Matter of fact most don't have to be pulled all the way out anyway . Colts are fine designs , just have thier limitations , just like the Remingtons do .

Colts foul out far less , way far less . And they point better , big perk .
Although I have dozens of Remingtons too now , both brands are exceptional guns , be it Colt or Remington . They really cannot be comapired to eachother they are so different in design anyway . They both shoot lead and thats all they have in common .
It did make me chuckle when I read that you might break the COLT though , now that's funny
