I fired my 44/40 Henry in an N-SSA team match for the first time two weeks ago and I now know why the 1866 had a wooden hand grip added to the barrel.  After firing over 20 black powder rounds in 3 minutes, the rifle barrel was too hot to hold and the magazine tube was about as bad.  I needed to put a glove on my left hand (right handed).  Just a general comment on the Henry design.

Welcome to the world of the Henry with BP ;D ;D.

Somewhere I once saw a picture of a Henry with a two piece hand guard, (kind of like a Winchester 87)  I have thought about putting a set on mine but since I haven't been able to find the picture again I haven't. ???
