Since I have not received a reply,I will clarify my question. When loading Black Powder cartridges or BP substitutes do you use standard or magnum rifle primers? Jim

Dirty Brass

I'm not an expert, but I load all my 45/60 and 45/75 cartridges with standard LR primers. I haven't had any problems yet, but my numbers are limited to about 250 rounds @

For my 50-90 Sharps BP loads i use  Fed. mag. primers

always works for me

Grizzly Adams

Hi, Cross-Stiks.

I use Winchester LR primers in all of my BP loads - 45-60, 45-75, and 45-70.  I have tried magnum primers, but can tell no difference in performance in any of my rifles. :)  I use Goex Express, Swiss 1.5 BP, and American Pioneer Powders and Goex Pinnacle substitutes.

At the range you will shoot a .45-60 it isn't going to make any difference what kind of primer you use.  For a time the extreme long range shooters tended to favor the Federal large rifle magnum primer.  Now more of them seem to be using regular primers.  Bottom line is that real BP and the subs all ignite pretty easily.

I think Grizz and Pettifogger are right i just never bothered to change for mags.

Stuck it my ways  ;D
