When: The first time some doofus was too lazy to clean his "gonne" after firing it. Amazing how even p***-poor excuses can have long lives, eh?

Why: The salts used in priming compounds for many, many years were far more corrosive than the BP fouling. The fouling didn't cause corrosion as much as it absorbed moisture from the air which then reacted with the iron and priming compound salts and rusted the bores of guns owned by lazy shooters!

Frenchie has iron in his words.

When "staynless" primers first showed up in factory only loads, so did heathen fad smokeyless powder.  The manufacturers made it sound like Holy Black was the ruin of all guns.  Heck, it was the corrosive primers.  Now, if those same shame faced manufacturers had made 'staynless' primers available to reloaders, Holy Black would be just another fine powder.

As it is, we have the truth.  We won't loose it again to some Olin marketing scheme.  Holy Black is here to stay and it's winning back a good piece of the market share.

I hear that all the time " I don't like cleaning, I like shooting". Then I ask them "don't you clean your guns after shooting them" And, they get all offended and say "of course I do!" and I say "what's the diffrence?

Then, since I shoot cap and ball,  it becomes a debate on loading I get the "I like to spend my tim e shooting, not reloading". So, it becomes the "So, you spend your reloading time in the garage and I do it at the range,........I'll take the range!"

I really think it's mostly people are just afraid of pouring powder directly into a firearm. That explains why I keep seeing really nice, used muzzle loaders for sale that have never been fired. It's really to bad.

I like cleaning afterwards.  Another excuse to hold 'em before they got to be put away.

PUK,

I agree.  One time I used my 1866 Win. at a Pistol Caliber Lever Action Silhouette match and used smokeyless rounds in it for the match.  Took forever it seemed to clean the thing. >:(  Won't shoot smokeyless in it ever again.  It takes me no time to clean it after shooting BP through it after a match.

Yea, it helps you to understand the firearm, too. I think about how it must have been, cleaning your firearms, by oil lamp or campfire light. It sure make me glad I have that extra set of floresents in the garage!

Quite frankly, I don't get the whole idea of shooting BP in cartridges, anyway. To me, shooting BP is about pouring powder into the gun and not into the reloading press. But, I guess, to each their own.

The on;y cartridges I shoot with BP in them were ones that were originally developed using BP.  Those include .45 Colt, .45 Schofield and .45-70.  I seem to have a thing for .45 as well. ::)  The way I see it BP cartridges are all a part of firearms developement and are part of history.  That is part of the reason I am in CAS to begin with.

I also have an 1859 Sharps Carbine in .54 Percussion.  I make paper cartridges for it. ;D ::)  It's a whole lotta fun to shoot too.

I went out and shot  a number of pistols the other afternoon.  Some was practice and some was just to fire some pistols that I hadn't used in a while.  Those that were shot with smokless were using Red Dot powder behind commercially purchased hard lead bullets with whatever lube the company put on them.  Cleaning took forever. :-\  Just when I would think I had scrubbed enough I'd run another new patch through and it would come out with gray all over it.  Thought the barrel was rubbing off on it.  The pistols that were shot with black powder cleaned up with only two or three patches.  Probably would be even faster if I would really trust those bore snakes I bought a while back. ::)

Why the myth? Part of it was propaganda, when Smokeless was new few people reloaded for it, shooters simply had no expertise in using those smaller, higher pressure charges. Many shooters still loaded with BP, though. The ammo companies of the day hated that, they made their money selling loaded cartridges.

Then, as the BP generations died off, folks forgot how to clean the guns. So shooters would try to clean a BP gun without any water. Since they didn't know any better, they got rust. Ooops!

Dick Dastardly

Gentlemen, Pards all,

Holy Black never was the culprit.  It was the victim.  It was the dang primers.  When "Staynless" primers became available, they were only put in new FACTORY made ammo.  The rest of us were stuck with the corrosive stuff.  So, Holy Black got a bad name.

Now, with them non corrosive primers widely available for us what choose to reload them little brass bottles with our own choices, it seems that Holy Black ain't near so corrosive as it was once taught.

Black Powder is a fine propellant.  It is very capable of giving STANDARD DEVIATIONS that heathen powder is hard pressed to duplicate.  In fact, when it comes to very Long Range rifle shooting with cast bullets, Holy Black is winning over all the other powders.

Black Powder is alive and well.  We are relearning how good it is.
