I read the book over the Winter. It was entertaining.

Yep. I saw the trailer earlier.  Looks like it has a lot of potential.

Thats one heck of a tag line.  Looks good and actually has some contemporary actors in it.  We may have ta see that one at the theater.

Hope the movie editors pay more attention to detail than the guys that made the poster showing Ed Harris holding a prop gun.  Check out the cylinder stops on his "peacemaker"!  Not to be a killjoy but when moviemakers put millions of dollars on the line, why not run the pre-production stuff by someone who has seen a gun before?

They seem to not care about gun accuracy in movies anymore.  Guess they know that most folks watchin have no idea themselves.

To illustrate, here is a screen capture of the prop revolver in question -

Good Grief!  You'd think, with the budgets to make movies these days, they could sporing for something a bit better than a $60 potmetal non-firing replica!  ::)

Major John M. Robson, Royal Scots of Canada, 1883-1901
Sgt. John Robson, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, 1885

River City John

I would suspicion a severe case of political correctness or misguided legal precaution, rather than just not knowing any better. Perhaps someone, somewhere decided for whatever reason it wouldn't be advisable to have a photo shoot or theatre advertising that featured an actual firearm?
(Although I could sure see where an independant photographer would have gotten replicas as a safe prop and might not have realized there were differences that would show up in an extreme close-up.)

I bet the actual prop master on the film knew his stuff, though.

If the movie is like the book anyone going to see it expecting to have a historical epiphany will be disappointed. The book was a good, quick read that once you started reading it the book was hard to put down. But it isn't a source of historical reference on the Old West. What the book was really about is the bond between the hero, Virigl Cole (Ed Harris' role), and his sidekick/deputy, Everitt Hitch (Viggo Mortensen). Throw in a power hungry rancher, and an attractive widow lady to increase the tension between Cole and the rancher.

I look forward to seeing the movie, besides a bad Western is MUCH, MUCH BETTER than Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, or Steel Magnolias, or Brokeback Mountain, etc.

Guns Garrett

Virgil Cole as a Western character?  Could he be the great-grandfather of another movie hero - "Cole, Virgil Cole"  (Willem Dafoe, "Flight of the Intruder") I was an A-6 tech (and variants) for over 20 years.  The 'Po City escapades and "let's make the non-Aircrew guy barf" scenes brought tears of nostalgia to my eyes.

As always, I really looking forward to the movie.  However, I try to keep in mind that it's 'entertainment'.  Historical accuracy is always a nice plus, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

With that said, whoever did the close-up view of that prop gun needs to be 'talked to'... >:(

It appears that the film has a great cast.  I've never seen where Viggo Mortensen put in a half effort.  Ed Harris and Jeremy Irons are also great and Renée Zellweger is not bad to look at... so I am optimistic.

Like O.T. , I'm always happy to see a western come out on the big or small screen.  From the list of cast members, one can know pretty quickly whether historical accuracy is one  of the goals that the actors, producers, directors are striving towards.  Selleck gets it.  Sure there are some oversights in his movies, but for the most part, I can re watch them for the sole purpose of studying the guns, gear, and other eye candy.  I grew up on John Wayne movies and loved them especially True Grit, The Cowboys, and the Shootist, but my attraction to them was more for the moral message than it was for the accuracy on the screen.  A person had to choke down the sight of seeing "The Duke" coming out of the Civil War (The Undefeated)  wearing a Peacemaker and toting an 1892 Winchester.

If I had my druthers, I would have another rating alongside the PG,R, etc.....for accuracy...A, B, C, D, and Fail !

The poster art may have been contracted out to a New York art studio. I've known several New York book cover photographers, and they often keep a selection of those pot-metal fake guns in the studio rather than deal with the legal hassles, insurance, etc. that come with keeping guns in New York.
