I got a lot of good info on Hardee Hats from old topic discussions, but nowhere did anybody mention where a good place to purchase one from.  I found them listed with C&C Sutlery, Dirty Billy's, TP & H Trading, and Fall Creek.  I am really interested in the 1855 style over the 1858 style.  My budget is very limited, so cost is a factor.  Does anybody have a Hardee Hat,  where did you get it and what do you think of the quality?  Thanks.

I got an inexpensive one from Hatcrafters a few years ago and decorated it myself (hat cord, corps (branch) insignia, etc).  Since I only wanted it for occasional wear (I've worn it perhaps 2-3 times), it has served its purpose well, but if I wouldn't advise it for frequent wear.

I haven't gotten any hats from Fall Creek, but other products I've received from them have been of good quality.

Thanks.  I am just looking for one for "dress" occasions.  Also which side should the plume go on for cavalry?  I have seen in on both sides in photos.  How is it attached?

See Paragraphs 32 and 45 here: http://www.usregulars.com/genorder6.html

I've owned two dress hats from Dirty Billy and been happy with both.

One easy way to remember which side is up is to remember which side the primary arm was carried at the shoulder.  For mounted troops (cavalry, dragoons, mounted rifles, light and horse artillery) and all officers, who carried swords on the right shoulder, the right side is up.  For foot troops (infantry, heavy artillery, engineers, etc) who carried rifles (or muskets) on the left shoulder, the left side is up.

Thanks to both of you gentlemen.  The info you gave is most appreciated.  Also Frenchie, if I may suggest, other GAF members my appreciate that link you provided and may not read this topic.  It might be a good topic of it's own.  Again thanks.
