I'm looking at a '73 Win. Uberti in 44-40. The barrel markings only say Allen arms. I've done a search and found some info on them, but was wondering if anyone knows the quality of these older guns and what kind of wood was used on the stocks. I'm thinking it was used as re-enacting gun as the rifling is described as shiny and crisp - never used in cowboy shooting events. Any info would be appreciated.

Allen firearms was owned by Leonard Allen (formerly Western Arms until threatened with legal action by Winchester/Western) and was an importer of Italian guns who was bought out by Mike Harvey of Cimarron in the 1980's. The wood is European walnut.

I had an Allen Arms Henry  (81 date code) it was sweet shooter , infact it still is... ;)
only issue was a bent magazine spring and that was my fault, I hung it up in atree on horseback reenacting at the 82 Saylor's Creek CW event.
European walnut was pleasing as was Fit & Finish

Thanks for the info - sounds like it's not too great of a risk to pick this one up if the price is acceptable.

No dog in the fight... but I'd be on it if the price was acceptable.

The afore mentioned Henry I had, I sold (Daughter was born needed cash)  infact in the years I owned it
I made a profit paid $350 NIB + $10 shipping and $15 FFL dros charge = $375 and sold it 8 years later well used but not abused for $450.
:o $375 NIB now a Henry NIB  is a grand or more ...
My wife bought me a replacement Christmas "99" at $900
