Anyone know some good links to buy second hand SASS clothing?  I took a little trip to the thrift store last night and was able to find a few things, couple shirts a vest, some boots that only the one I tried on fits???  Yep that kind of stuff.

Picked up a couple fine looking Bailey Hats off ebay at some real nice prices too.  I was supprised that all you have to do is type in SASS into ebay and hords of stuff comes up!

What I'd really like to find is a Civil War, Union Officers Jacket.  eBay has them at $65.00 which ain't all that bad just more then I want to spend right now.  Still I've got a few months before I'd spect to put on any blasted thick layer of wool here in Mississippi though!!

$65 is not all that bad.. really,  for a good Quality Officer shell that's cheap. But if you used a sack coat with shoulder bars
it's perfect for Trans Mississippi Union mid and late war.
A used sack coat could be had for maybe $30-40..I might even have some Lt and/or Capt bars around here somewhere

In Mississippi you have C&D Jarnigan up in Cornith... he's made qualiy equipment & I've known him for 30 years.
There is Fall Creek Sutlery in Ohio... Andy Falks is a good friend
I know another good friend/Sutler here and he has moved all my used stuff, John Holmes @ Kissimmee River Depot
infact I've know all of them 30 years  :o

Thanks Major
What's a sack coat? (I used to have a teacher who'd always say there was no stupid question.  She stopped saying that the year I repeated her class?)  Great idea though on finding a close match to the same style jacket.  I was watching a John Wayne movie this morning and it looks like the collar is smaller then a coats collar but the rest pretty much looked simple to make do with something else?

I managed to find a couple more things off ebay today at some great prices!  Got to love that place, hate the shipping.
I picked up a really nice full leather SCULLY vest and some used (Broken in) lizard Tony Lama boots that are in great shape!  Almost ready for business I'd say?

She was right..nobody is born knowing everything  ;)

a Sack Coat is the standard Issue 4 button coat issue to all branches of the service...It was based on the style of civilian coat of that era.
by late 1863 even officers were wearing them... US Grant perfered them and wore his with Generals bars...

New they are about $65 un lined  (most common issue) by 1864 there was an officers version with a breast pocket and 5 buttons..

But a good used Fed. issue 4 button will do you fine...add bars if you like

Thanks again!
I'd have to mix match it with more western era clothes, cause my revolver is after that period I believe but I image that was done back then?  At least you see it in the movies so it seems to fit.  Might make a nice looking winter outfit?

Howdy

I talked Old Top into getting a sack coat from Walker 47 out here in California awhile back for $50 new. that is Old Top on the left. Walker may still have a couple in stock. Top was pretty pleased with it once he got it.

I just got some vests made for me by Concha Wade in Las Vegas. I have a wool vest that is about worn out, and she duplicated it.

Shopping around is half the fun of the game.

Deadeye Don

I checked some of the Amish clothing websites.   From what I can see they are more expensive than CAS websites.

Ozark Tracker

we have Menonites here in this area, I know a lot of the women sew for others, they usually don't advertise but if you know any of them or anybody who does, I bet you could get one of the ladies to sew whatever you wanted at a reasonable price.  almost all of them around here do things on the side, one down the road from me, I just found out is a leather worker,  I've seen some of his work, thinking bout going over visiting and see if he could do holsters.

That's the only reason I haven't approached him yet,  we have  a mutual friend who is one of the Menonites,  I just recently talked to the friend and asked about how he would feel about it.  John (our friend) says he thought  he would make a holster for that purpose (fun) and not have a problem,  so John is supposed to ask him and see for sure.

John, my friend,  hauls litter and cleans out poultry houses on the side, he has a turkey farm too.  he comes by every coupla months for a visit,  John loves to hear stories about what's on TV,  since they don't have them,  when they come for a visit, the kids plop down in front of the TV and ya can't hardly talk to John, he's so intent on watching what's on there too.   ;D

St. George

There are a number of posts on the 'Historical Society' forum and the 'NCOWS' forum that deal with this question.

They're full of ideas and suggestions as to what to look for, how to adapt it and how to create something all on your own.

I picked up a new-condition Stetson, with a modern Cattleman's Crease, for a bit less than $8.

Upon steaming and re-shaping, and the addition of a different hatband, it now has the three-punch 'Montana Peak' that was so popular in the 1890's.

No doubt, bargains abound if you do your research and know what to be looking for, and you can begin doing that by perusing just the Time-Life seried 'The Old West' - available at your Public Library.

If you're thinking of having leather made - remember that the leather of the era used for gun rigs was of a lighter-weight than is in common use, but for all that - I've found that Mennonites and Amish who do leather work can replicate about anything, and enjoy replicating things from an earlier time, and their Blacksmiths can produce nice knives, as well.

Those women who sew can be a true blessing, since many of the things found in Thrift Stores and Estate Sales may need some 'help' - so if you can cultivate a good seamstress, it'll pay off, and I've found them to be very reasonable in their pricing.

Of course, you 'could' sew it yourself - many did - and if you're doing a period-correct Impression, small repairs would be common.

Good Luck!

Sure , Don ...glad to
I've dealt with Gohn Bros. for years, their natural (white) cotton pants will dye nicely...
They have hard rubber buttons (OK) or in some case plastic buttons , which I change out.

They have some Cordaroy in Blue & Black that works well in a dresser fashion...
