Schofield and Cowboy Mounted Shooting

I'm thinking about a Uberti Schofield in .45LC (Sheriff or Wells Fargo in nickle) as a Cowboy Mounted Shooting gun.

For military style competitions it will be fine as we load and shoot six.

For CMS competitions we load and shoot five.  This means I must "stage" the cylander so that the empty chamber rests under the hammer.

I have a S&W Performance Center Wells Fargo piece.  With that I can load and stage by loading my five rounds with the empty chamber at the 11 o'clock position.  I then close action, pull the hammer to full cock, and lower in on the now empty chamber.  Will this method work with a Uberti?  Is there a better way?

I may yet end up buying another NMV if I can't find a way to make the Schofield work.  In truth, the NMV (or a Montadao) is probably a better operational choice, but since I'm never going to be all that fast I might was well get some style points.   ;)

Any input would be appreciated.

The process you describe works exactly the same way on my (Uberti-made) Laramie and New Model Russian break-tops.

I don't currently have an Uberti Schofield, but I suspect it is the same, too.

I got mine in 44-40 only because I understand there is a long waiting list for the Schofields, and I figured if I want one I'll take what I can get. take your time shop around and you'll find one in a caliber you want. The new ones I saw were around $900.  :-\ But you never know someone will have one at a better price. Look on the web you'll find some!  ;D

Howdy SQQ,

On GunsAmerica - Cimarron Pistols there are 4 Schofields, 3 in 45 Colt & 1 in 44 Win. Centerfire.  Didn't get to Uberti yet.

Thanks to all who've responded!   :)

"Economic conditions" are a limiting factor right now.  But, then, we just got our economic stimulus check and what better way to stimulate the economy, eh?!?!?!?!   ;)

I know about the replicas made by S&W and Uberti.  I know that there was once a third replica made by a different Italian manufacturer that had some real problems.  This is first I've heard about Cimmaron Schofields.  Who makes them?  Is there any reliable information on their quality, performance, etc.?

For my use it looks like a Wells Fargo model in nickle would be the best choice (and this is because nobody makes one in stainless).  A nickle Sheriff's model would be the second choice.  In mounted shooting a short barrel works out better than a long one for both handling ease and "balloon breaking performance."

So now I guess I have to "shop hard."   ;D

Thanks, again, for all the information.

Cimarron, Taylor and anyone else selling Uberti are just importers.  They have no control over what comes in or when it comes.  I have a simple rule with Uberti guns.  If I am interested in a gun I'll call the importers.  If any of them have it in stock, I'll order the gun.  If they are not in stock and they say they are back ordered, I forget about it.  Could be months, could be years, could be never.  These are all low production number guns and Uberti might not produce a run of a particular gun for a long time.  Try buying a 73 Musket.

Thank you, Mr. Pettifogger!

So Cimmarron is a Uberti?  I was concerned it was ASM, a version that has has pretty poor reputation.

I'm afraid you're right on availability.  When you're a "sole source" you can pretty much do what you want to and the market can like it or not.   :'(

Some old Cimarron Schofields were made by ASM.  They have a reputation for extremely poor quality.  They turn up on the used market occasionally.  If you find a used Cimarron Schofield made by ASM your best bet is to skip it.  ASM is out of business so all current production Schofields are made by Uberti.

Cousins

I just got me a new Uberti Schofield I bought her at Auction Arms. To stage a round with this'n it's a Navy arms Model 3, you are already on 1/2 cock to open to load, after loading your 5, close her up on the empty chamber. Then pull the trigger as you lower the hammer into the safe carry position and wiggle the cylinder counter clock wise just a smidge and you'll hear a click it is now locked on the empty chamber until you go to full cock. Try it you'll like it!

Oh yes has ya seen this'n http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=103756957

Thats how I got mine for under $700.00 at auction!!!  8)
