I don't know what powder flask to buy, and other things

I am going to need a powder flask, I like the cva brass that measures 5-120gr. But I havn't made up my mind on that, I plan on going to a big office supply store and see if a person can buy a box of the paper brown envolepes that are 2"x3" that have the glue at the open end. Then I could weigh out 20-25 loads, and seal them, but a person would still need a flask but if you were at a shoot, you could justtear the top off and pour your powder in?
Where and how do I get the right size of nipple wrench, how much are new nipples, where can I go to learn this stuff! I read where a guy has a gun like mine and he is usesing 451 ball's, Fingers told me to use 454, I bougt that 457, that cuts a small ring when pressed. Should I go to the Piette web sight, or do they have one?
I am so sorry to be a pain in the a$$ but I don't know what else to do! I will be great full for ANY AND ALL ADVICE!!!

You didn't say what kind of gun you have.  If it is a Pietta, they tend to have undersize chambers.  Most measure around .445.  So, a .451 is fine, a .454 will shave quite a bit of lead and a .457 is overkill.  For Ubertis a .454 is fine.

You'll find all that pre-measured stuff sounds good but is usually a waste of time at a match.  Just use a good flask.  The Treso flasks are the best built, but any of the round flasks with push button spouts are good.  The round styles have ends that unscrew so adding or dumping powder is easy.  The old style flasks use a screw in funnel to fill them and don't empty as easily at the end of the match.  Adjustable spouts are nice, nut most people simply use a fixed spout and carry two or three sizes.  For a .44 Pietta a 25 grain spout gives a nice load and a 30 comes in handy if there are knockdown targets.  Remember, BP ain't rocket science.  With real BP make sure you use a wonder wad or grease over the balls.  With the subs all you need is powder and ball.  At big matches all I use is APP and a round ball.  No lube, no muss, no fuss.  I shot 22 stages at EOT (Plainsman, the warm up match, and main match) with my Pietta .44s without a hickup.  Oh, I assume you know to throw the stock nipples in the trash and replace them with Tresos and use REMINGTON 10s!!!  This combo is almost foolproof.

Yes, Ace, there is a lot to learn.  But then again there is plenty of time, and advice available.  Have you looked above in the DARK ARTS?  The most relevant thread is on how to make paper cartridges.  Then you don't have to buy a flask.

At one time I collected some AK47 steel cases.  They are pretty cheap, layin' around cluttering up ranges.  They had enough room for a .36 load (22-25gr.) with a wooden plug made by hand (TEDIOUS!) but they take 35 gr. when full.  I also have some 8mm Berdan-primed cases, that take a 9mm case perfectly as a cap.  Measure in your .44 load and cap it!  Carry it how you will.  Dastardly Dick uses plastic vials for the same purpose.

Look for THUNDER RIDGE or TRESO nipples, there are many sources, and use Remington #10 caps.  The Rem #10s generally work with the factory supplied nips.

Hey Ace!  This new stuff sure is fun, isn't it!

Forget the paper products.  If your gun is a Colt style then get a Colt or Remington flask with a 25 (or so) grain spout.  They run about $35-40.   Same with the Remington.  CALL them - they'll steer ya right.  (The Remington has a cool dog on it, the Colt has a cannon and a "stand of flags.)  Both spouts are the same and will interchange.  Whether you have Pietta or Uberti (or other names of importers that exist) for 44 cal. you can't go wrong with .454.  Simplify.

Later, you can buy larger or smaller spouts for various reasons.  I have about 6 different size spouts.  I've found that 25-27 gr. (by volume) is best in my 44 cal. 1860 Army by Uberti.  That's out of a "30" gr. spout, but it actually throws an average of 27 grs.

I'll put a plug in for one of the round powder flasks.  That's what I use.  I have a 30 grain spout for it.  Use it with my 1860 Armies.  Like STeel Horse Bailey said it is nominally 30 grains.  I think mine is actually between 27 and 28 grains.  Anyway works great with the Armies.

I use .454 roundballs in my Uberti 1860 Armies and they cut rings every time I load.  Cutting rings off roundballs is good.  But you can also go smaller than .457 roundballs.  I use lubed wads all the time.  I don't use Wonder Wads.  Wonder Wads is a brand name and they are good, but I found another brand that has more lube in them.  Wonder Wads are more readily available.

As for nipples.  Go for the Treso or Thunderridge nipples if you can.  As said before, they take Remington #10 caps.  You can get the nipples from Thunderridge Muzzleloading on the web.  Which reminds me, I need to order a couple of sixpacks for myself.   Cabelas has the Remington #10 caps.  When I was still living in Denver and went to vislt relatives in Minnesota at some point, usually on the way back, I would stop at the Sidney, NE store and make a raid on Remingtomn #10 caps and other stuff too.  For me the Sidney, NE store was a nice day trip to get out of Denver.

Yep - That's WHY I had recommended a "Starter Kit" to the fellow I talked with.    I thought (because it USED to be) it was a copper flask, too.  However, maybe Cabella's has different priced versions  - I don't know.  Again, to Ace - call: they're good people to do business with.

The Cabela's starter flask is cheap plastic. Not worth buying at any price.
Go to a shoot and hope to find a Frontiersman. Sit him down and pick his brain. Most of us enjoy it. Some place that might serve adult beverages would be a good place to meet.
You must realize that each of us (Frontiersman) has a different opinion on everything and only mine is the correct one. For instance, my Pietta 1860s will spit caps all over the place with 28 grs of black. 23 grs and they are pussy cats.

I think that everyone needs to mark this down, this will be the only time in my life that I havn't jumped in head first without thinking it threw.
