Died July 4, 2008 at age 86.

"Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?" Helms wrote in a 1959 editorial that foretold his political style.

I'll apologize at the beginning here, but while I feel sympathy for his family he was a racist and a bigot.  Not a good guy at all.  One of those that made me ashamed to be from the south. Pretty much stood for most of what I am against.
