Washed the 2 quilts I use when it's cold, also they are 2 of my soogan quilts when I travel.  Gonna start the new year pretty soon snuggled down in a couple of heavy had made quilts.  Too bad I don't have the feather tick like at Grandma's just the pillows.  Course I won't have to get up and put cobs in the stove in the mornin', that pooper controled thing on the wall will throw some in fer me.

Used to use Grandma's old wash house fer a cabin, have fed cobs to a stove many amornin' when it was below just chilly.

Notice how Delmonico can't help himself with that certain word. It should have been "pooter".

Okie, folks, now I am looking for help. While I was waiting for traffic to clear after picking up Minny, I killed time in a needlework shop that had some high quality, high thread count, heavy weight flannel. Just paint my hat like a lollipop, because I bought 1 yard each of 12 different colors to make a quilt!

The lady of the shop talked me into getting a rotary cutter and one of those green plastic mats to cut the fabric. The green mat stinks of plastic and chemicals, but I hope that will wear off in time. I'm going to make just a simple patchwork of 8" squares so will be cutting the fabric into 9" squares (1/2" seams). That means I'll have... Yikes, 192 squares!! If I make it 12 squares wide (96" or 8ft), that means the length will be 16 squares long, or 128" (10 2/3 ft). Is that too big for a comforter?

Also, the lady was saying that I really needed a rack, even if I was going to tie it, and that when I put it together, I would have to stretch the whole thing out someplace and use some kind of special pins. Was she telling me true, or just spinning a tale to get me to buy more specialized stuff?

Thanks,

AnnieLee

Annie, don't forget your seam allowances.  You don't have to tie it off by hand.  You can machine sew at together with the batting and backing by sewing in the seams between the squares.  this is called "stitching in the ditch"  I'll see if I can get my wife to respond to your questions.

Hi Annie,
This is Mrs. Ketchum with a suggestion.  Will bought me a tubular quilt rack to tie my quilts.  It is about 3 feet by 5 feet and you just move the quilt thru it as you tie it off.  It doesn't take up much room and you can store it easily.  I usually lay my quilt top on the floor face down, lay the batting on top, put the backing material face sid up and safety pin it together.  With that size you will have a nice queen size comforter.

If you choose not to tie it, you can random quilt it or stitch in the ditch.  Anything is fine.

Thank you, Mrs. Ketchum and Will! Maybe this will be fun and not a pain in the neck!
