I figured that i would ask this question to help out me and some of the new leathercrafters on this website.

I am wondering what yall use for tools when carving oak leaves?

I just use my carving knife, beveler and a pear shader.

Please post what yall use for tools. I think this would be a big help to the new leathercafters.

thanks

That's just about it, although I use up to four different bevelers; a medium straight, a sheep foot (or whatever it's called) to pick up the leaves where folded over, a triangle to get into the places where stems converge and a medium figure carving one. I also use two different sizes of pear shaders, one to get the main part of the leaves and another for the tips. Bear in mind that these vary depending on the size of the leaves I'm making but that's the basic idea.

I also like a tight background pattern to set off the large expanses of the leaves.

It's been years since I did a acorn or oak leaf design. I liked using the checkered shaders and bevelers on the oak leaf patterns for a little subtle texture. Other than that it was pretty much as the Marshall described it.
Good luck with yours,
