I'm building a freight box for shipping a rifle ca 1875 from Hartford out to Denver Colorado and I'm looking for some authentic looking freight lables and printed box stuff for it. Anyone know of a source or site I might get somei ideas for this?

Stuff boxed in crates often had the labeling just stenciled on, with something like an oaktag address label to the recipient handwritten out in ink and attached at the corners with carpet tacks or similar.

Does anyone know if the crates were stained or painted?

Most usually crates were in raw wood, as their purpose was temporary.
Boxes meant for long storage, i.e. ammunition for the Army, were painted and stenciled with ammo type and arsenal, so that they could be stored until used.
