Does anyone have the new Lyman reloading manual yet?  If so, what kind of new CAS cartridges did they include which weren't in previously?  I am really interested and don't have the manual yet!

Russian,

Ordered one from the Lyman web site on the 5th and it showed up today (8th).    What I've noticed so far is that it now includes loading data for the 44 Russian, 45 S&W Schofield and the 45GAP.  It has also added powder and bullets to most of the data posted in the 48th edition and contains about 40 more pages.  But the best part for me is the Chapter 11, "Handloading the 1876 Winchester Replicas by Brian Pearce".  In it he list loads for the 40-60, 45-60 and 45-75. The guns used were all Chaparrals.  The 40-60 and 45-75 had 26" barrels, the 45-60 had a 22".

For the 40-60 they used their 200 grain #403168 bullet and IMR 4198,  AA5744,  AA2015,   777 FFg,   Varget and Trail Boss powders.  The fastest load was 1599fps with AA5744.

For the 45-60 they have data using both their 292 grain # 457191 bullet and their 330 grain hollow point #457122.  They used the same powders as they did for the 40-60 but also showed a load of two 30-gr Pyrodex pistol pellets under a 292 gr bullet that produced 1533fps.  That was the highest velocity with the 292 gr. Bullet.    The fastest load using the 330 gr was 1252 fps with AA 2015.

The 45-75 used the same bullets and powder as the 45-60 but added H4895 to the list.  The fastest 292 gr load 1555 fps using Varget with a H4895 load at 1521 a close second.

The fastest 330 gr load was 1508 using AA2015 with H4895 again a close second at 1480fps.
Oh and the two 30 gr pellets or Pyrodex generated 1437fps with the 330 grainer.

This data is found only in Chapter 11, it didn't make it into the main data section.  I wish they would have included data for IMR3031 but I guess I'll have to wait for the next edition for that one.  Another thing I wish they had included is chamber  pressures but there are none shown.

When I first got my NWMP 76 in May 2007 I was told that the safe pressure limit was around 20,000 C.U.P.   But in the article it says when talking about reproduction 1876 rifles, " they feature improved steels and are capable of safely handling smokeless powder loads with pressures up to 28,000 C.U.P.".  Now if you go to the section that list 45-70 load for the 1886 Winchester and 1895 Marlins it says in the introduction that the data listed in that section is worked up to the SAAMI maximum average pressure of 28,000C.U.P.    Now that we finally have some published data I'm not going to rush out and exceed it but I cant hardly wait for the next batch of data to come out listing pressures and maybe bump up a little over the 20,000cup level.  If you look at the pressure it takes to push the same bullet to the same velocity with the same powder it looks to me that the loads currently listed are well below that level.

HOLY SUGAR, Grouch!  Did you write the 49th yourself?  I have mine here on the floor and it would take me a week to compare the differences.  Good post.

Got mine in the mail today and had a chance to browse it.  It is a pretty good writeup as far as it goes but does not show any data on the 350 grain slugs for the 45-75.  Got an idea that more data may follow in the next edition--at least one would hope so.  There are other mfg'd cases around besides the Jamison that you can't get anymore.   If the whole article were to be expanded, I got a feeling that it could be a good place to start for new folks to the game.  He has alot more powders to play with out there too.

Glad to see that things are starting to move for us though!   ;)

When in doubt, mumble!

larryo:  Lyman only provides data for molds that are part of their standard production molds, like their new 40-65 mold.
The only standard Lyman mold is the 457122 and there is data there under the 45-70 section.

Should the special run of the Ideal 457192 that they made for us become a standard mold in their inventory ... then I'm sure it will be in their reloading book.

In the meantime - plenty of loading information here on the forum
