Fox Creek Kid

Just got back my recently purchased 2nd Gen. '51 Navy from "Rifle" who posts here now & then. WOW!!! The gun had many problems but Rifle straightened them out.  ;)  He milled off the cam & fitted a new one, fitted a new bolt & trigger as well. Finally, he beautifully dovetailed in a sweet little front sight (extra tall) as well as chamfered the forcing cone and refaced the muzzle giving it a new crown as well. Yesterday, I "dialed in" at 15 yds. with approx. 20 gr. FFFg and it shot a ragged hole after careful filing & a frog hair of front sight drift. For those of you who have never shot a professionally tuned cap 'n ball you don't know what you're missing. It's like the difference between a Ferrari & a Ford.  :)

"Rifle" here on CAS City, is THE man for cap 'n balls IMO. Maybe a great review like this will even make that ol' tightwad Hellgate pony up!!  ;D :D :o ;)

Good to hear.   My Belgian 1860 is a beautiful historic replica, but does have a few timing problems.  I may have to send it off to him.

Thanks for the praise Fox Creek. I'm glad you're happy with your gun. Someone mentioned a Belgian? (44Caliberkid?)I collect them and have worked more than a few of those. They are somewhat clunky as they come from the factory but have redeeming qualities and ....when the actions are put right they are sweet. I like the idea of the cylinder chambers in them are the same as the groove diameter in the barrels and if the barrel is good they shoot good. I'm surprised that a cap&ball shooter extrourdinaire like "The Fox Creek Kid" doesn't have a pair of those 1860's? :o  The configuration of the hammers rear sight and the higher front sight make fer POA and POI being real close. They have a trait of shooting a little low unless the powder charge is up close to 30gr. FFFg Holy Black.  They have some overly stiff springs especially the mainspring that's like a bear trap. The mainspring in those Belgians is longer than any I've seen in cap&ballers and replacing one isn't easy. I guess if one broke it would have to be fabricated from scratch. I lighten the mainsprings in the Belgians by tapering the whole spring thinner and don't like the hour glass method that's used so often. The springs in the old classic shotguns are an example of how a spring should be tapered on it's flat and not thinned in the width. Anywhoooo.....parts don't come easy for the Belgians. Anywhooo...I'd be glad to take a look at 44"s Belgian to see what she needs. rifleman2006@peoplepc.com.

No camera.

Artist's rendering...?  :)

Thanks for the referral.  I too have a 60 Army (Pietta) that could benefit from somebody who knows what they're doing, which rules me out.

I've got my excuses and I'm stickin' to 'em.
