Have a new Uberti 1860 Army that shoots a foot high at 25 yds. I'm going to make a new front sight from .125 brass. I'm wondering how much higher than the stock sight I should make it to get it in the ball park? I think I'm gonna cut the hammer notch square as well. Any ideas would be appreciated- KID

Jest my opinion on this but.......

iffn yer gonna cut the hammer notch square you will by virtue of the fact that you are removing metal albeit a small amount, the chances are that it will affect the POA and will in fact LOWER it!!

Perhaps modify yer hammer,THEN  see iffn ya still need ta make a taller front sight

Again this is jest my Opinion!! And, I aint NO Gunsmith  ::)

I stoned the top of the hammer down as to lower the rear sight. I havn't shot it yet, but I still think I might have to make a higher front sight. Thanks for the reply. I'm open to any suggestions.-KID

CK,

Sight adjustments to change point of impact (elevation or windage) are a proportion between change needed, point of impact, sight radius and distance to target.

Sight change needed divided by sight radius equalls point of impact (high or low / right or left) divided by distance to target.  All dimensions are in inches.

Since you have already modified your hammer to some extent and I don't have a M'1860 in front of me, the example that follows assumes a sight radius of 11" and your first results with an unmodified hammer.  You can make adjustments to the example after your next firing test and with a good sight radius measurement.

Sight change divided by 11" = 12" divided by 900" (25 yards x 36" per yard).

Sight change = 12" x 11" divided by 900"

Sight change = 0.147"

In this case 0.147" additional height needs to be added to the front sight or removed from the rear sight or a combination of both (some added to the front sight and some removed from the rear sight) as long as the total added and removed = 0.147".

Make sure of the load that you are going to settle on before making the changes as once they are done they are done.  Approach the changes on the safe side and tweek the dimensions a little at a time and test fire after each tweek.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't remember how to figure it out. Going to shoot it sunday and will go from there. Once I get this one straightened out I want to get another 1860 so I have a pair.-Kid

Give this a thought....

My technique is pretty "caveman". I duct-tape a cardboard sight in place of the front sight. Take to the range and fire for effect. trim as necessary to get proper sight hieght. Take home, make the front sight, secure to the pistol and it will be correct.

One of my better tips.

Shot Sunday and the work I did on the hammer has it down to 6" high now. Much better. Going to make a higher front sight now,and that should do it. Been shooting about 25 grains , wonderif I upped it to 30 it woud bring it down - Kid
