Pony Soldier

Just finished reading "Hard Tack and Coffee" by John Billings.  Billings was a Civil War veteran and wrote of what life was like for the average Union soldier.  A good book to read from some one who was there written in plain simple every day language.  Very different from the usual book on the Civil War.

Books OToole

The book is worth having just for the illustrations.

I would recommend The Life of Billy Yank by Bell Irwin Wiley if you enjoyed Hard Tack and Coffee.  It is not a first person account as such but it gives excellent insight to the Union Civil War soldier  It was published in 1952.  If you are of the other persuasion he published The Life of Johnney Red in 1943.  Both are very good.
