i always leave a fired cartridge in the chamber chamber. so as i swab it out the cartridge will catch most of the junk. just be carful that you don't get your clean rod stuck. kurt250

Grizzly Adams

These rifles were designed for use with BP, and are very easy to clean.  It is not necessary or desireable to dismantle the rifle for routine cleaning.

For routine cleaning after shooting either BP or smokeless, open the action and push the carrier all the way down.  Then lay the  rifle upside down across something with the action open and facing down.  This keeps any debris from dropping down into the action.   Using a cleaning rod with a bore guide, run wet patches down the bore until clean. This usually only requires 3 or 4.  Dry with a couple more patches, and then lube the bore with Ballistal.

As for what you use as a cleaning agent, hot water works well as does a number of other concoctions!  I personally like Windex!  Just make sure it is not the kind with ammonia in it. ;D

Grizzly is right.  This is by far the best way to clean a Winchester after shooting black powder.  These photos show how I set mine up.  Run the patch from the muzzle to the chamber and everything will fall down and out the open top of the receiver.  Nothing will end up inside the action.  I use dish soap and warm water or Simple Green and warm water.  My patches are wet but not dripping.  After the clean dry patches are run through the bore, I run an oily patch through a couple of times.  Piece of cake.

Went out and bought myself a gun vise. I don't know how I managed without one 'til now.

John Boy,
You're right on both counts.  I DID clean up the bench "a little" and the do-dad tray is always a mess.  I promise I'll try to do better.

Adios,
Buck
