Floral Flannel Fabric

I went to JoAnn Fabrics tonight, looking for material to use as a cover for my loading bench. I found and bought the below fabric. It's flannel, of course. :D But it is softer than any other new flannel I've touched. It feels like it's been washed several dozen times and is all "broken in."
The lady at the store said it was an "old time" flannel. I haven't seen anything like it before. Is it an "old time" pattern? And what can I use it for? Now that I have it home, I like it so much I am reluctant to use it as a dust cover.

Thanks,

AnnieLee

Old Top

Annie,

I do not think it would make a good pair of pants, but it might make a good flannel shirt.    ??? ??? ???

That is nice flannel. I agree with Old Top. A shirt.  ;D

Looking at it now, I wish I had bought more of it because I think it would make a pretty dress. But then there'd be buttons and button holes....

blech, blech, blech, I hate to sew button holes!

Is there any period correct alternative to buttons?

I'm bumping this one back up in hopes that someone has an alternative to buttons.

<totally serious> Del, if you'd make me a quilt, I'd send you enough fabric to make two of them.

Dunno if you could make me a dress.

I may just go with hooks and eyes. It's real tempting to call up the folks at Recollections and ask them if they'd sew it if I sent the fabric. The dress I got from them is really pretty and fits beautifully.

Howdy AnnieLee,

I have a reproduction of the 1897 Sears Catalog. It shows hooks & eyes as Delmonico suggested. Also shown are what my Mom called "frogs" which are called "loop sets" in the catalog. These are kind of a fancy knot made out of cord, that goes into a fancy loop made of cord. You still have to sew these on, but the loop takes the place of making the buttonhole. Can be very pretty and also period correct. Would they help?

C'mon over.  I'll get my wife to help.  We'll simply sew you into it.  ;D
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

Delmonico

I didn't even think about frogs.  Both frogs and hook and eyes date back perhaps several hundred years.  Frongs though might be a little fancy fer flannel most often see it on either coats or velvet ladies clothing.

As fer the quilt there are my three kids, my nephew and my niece in line first.  But do save any scraps.

Standpat Steve, if you can, would you please post some pics from that catalog? I've used frogs before in some of the cloaks I have made and they are a good idea.

Forty Rod, the idea of your wife and you sewing me into a dress gives me images of that guy in one of the Hannibal Lector movies and his "dress" and gives me the shivers!

Thanks,

AnnieLee

Okie, someone hide Forty Rod's eyes, because I got an idea on the way to verk this morning.

<whispers> I am going to make a circle skirt out of that fabric. Then I am going to get about 10 yds of another flannel and send it off to Red, my corset maker. She's going to make a flannel corset dress for me.

Howdy AnnieLee,

I tried taking a picture from the catalog, but it came out without any detail-and you couldn't read the writng either. Sorry . . . They offered three of them:

1) A stylish black silk military cord loop set- $0.90
2) A special 4 piece mohair loop set (from France)- $1.18
3) A most stylish four-piece silk military loop set- $1.75

Thank you for trying, Standpat Steve, I appreciate the effort.

With warm regards,
