Silly sentimental me

I'm parring down my guns, and I have a Ist series Merwin for sale.
A guy contacted me and made an offer. The offer is not bad, but
he said he would like the pistol for parts.
The revolver has matching parts and except for a replaced take down
slide and loading gate button, is original.
I'm really having a problem selling a 130 year old matching pistol if it's
gonna be broke down for parts.
Am I just a sentimental fool? Does anybody else know what i'm talking
about?

Don't feel alone - I wouldn't sell it if I knew it was going to be broken down.

Too many good originals have already suffered this ignominious fate.

Were it mine - I'd add a period holster and keep it.

However - were I wanting to part with it - I'd find a young collector who'd give it a good home as a real example of the Old West - and maybe give him a bit of a bargain on the asking price after you've discerned his seriousness.

Helping a neophyte in the accumulation of a collection is good Karma, I think, since new guys are looked upon as 'rightful prey' by too many older collectors, and they get fleeced often enough that they lose interest.

What are you asking, and can you provide a decent photo?

I turned the fella down and sold it to an English collector, who swore to keep it as is.
He can own it since it is an obsolete cartridge.
Thinking it'll stay together at least a little while longer, has made me feel better.

The carpenter I use is from England.  We had a talk about gun laws one day and their's make California's look liberal.  I'm sure if this fella was willing to endure all it takes to own one, the odds he'd dismantle it are pretty slim.
     I'm sure your old friend is in good hands.
