    In the years that Winchester produced both the '76 and the '86, what were the prices of each?

Here is a rundown of the catalog prices in 1891.

Model 1876;

Standard sporting rifle, 28" round barrel.......$19.50     Octagon Barrel.......$21.00

Special sporting rifle, 28" round or octagon barrel........... $37.00

Saddle Ring Carbine.....................................................$19.00

Model 1886:

Standard sporting rifle, 26" octagon barrel.....$21.00

Special sporting rifle, 26" octagon barrel........$36.00

As you can see, the prices were nearly the same for both models, at least in 1891.

I know what you mean.  These guns were expensive for the time, but I can't help but think what it would have been like to order a brand new 1876 Winchester special sporting rifle with case colored receiver, deluxe checkered pistol grip stock and set trigger, in .50 Express.  This same gun in new unfired condition today would be worth $85,000, plus.

Adios,
Buck
