Has anyone tried Graf & Sons black powder? I just got some today and have not had a chance to try it yet.

Quick Fire

I've used it exclusively for the last two years and really like it.

Graf and Sons BP is made by WANO Schwartzpulver in Germany and imported by Scheutzen Powder LLC. It is one of the best kept secrets in the BP crowd. The thing that makes it so good is the use of Alder wood in the making of the charcoal. Alder is one of the best woods known for high quality charcoal used in the manufacture of explosives for military use (yes, folks some of our big guns still use good ol' BP). You can't go wrong with it, especially at the price it is going for...I pay $11/lb as opposed to $20+ for most subs. One warning I would give is to NOT inhale the resultant smoke as it can change your whole outlook on shooting.

Last summer I was "forced" to get some Graf & Sons 2f instead of my usual Goex 2f or Cowboy from the local supplier I usually get my BP from. ::)  I tried it and found I liked it better than my old Goex.  Now I can't get it from my local supplier. >:(  So for the present I will continue to use Goex, but if I can find a supplier of the Graf & Sons I'll start getting it.  But I'll wait to do that until I get relocated.

Graf and Sons Schuetzen is super duper stuff.

I have used in C&B, 38 spl, 44 russian and 12 guage rounds all with reliable ignition and really no more resultant crud than the little I git from APP.

At the price it is at compared to bp locally - I can afford to pay the UPS shipping and the hazmat fee and come out on top.

Hazmat is a fixed price.  One can of cheep will get the same charge as 25 cans of spendy.  Economy says go by the case of 25.  Wano is Schuetzen.  Next time I order powder I'm going to get the Wano Schuetzen.  Grafs is the same stuff.

I'm going to stock up a bit on this high quality powder.  It'll get used in my rifle and pistol ammo.  For scattergun I'll stay with LIDU FFg.  It's working good and I'm getting the patterns I want.

Happy to have choices.

I use it in 44-40 for my Henry & '66 but try as I did I could not get it to shoot as well as GOEX FFg in my cartridge revolvers. A year ago I did a scientific test with CCI Reg. & CCI Magnum primers at 10 yds. in two '72 Open Tops & one '60 Army RM, all in .44 Colt. I tried Swiss, GOEX & Schuetzen. I used FFg & FFFg in all. GOEX FFg with CCI Reg. primers shot ragged one hole groups to POA in all. Granted, as Gripmaker stated earlier, Schuetzen is a top notch powder just a rung below Swiss, but the target is what counts in the end. Function is not a problem as I use a BIG LUBE type bullet and so should you!  ;D ;) I encourage everyone to put their guns on paper with a variety of loads to determine what they like best.  :)

Howdy

As far as I can tell, the stuff that Graf sells, and Schuetzen are the exact same stuff. Take a look at the bottle of Schuetzen:

It looks to me like Graf is merely putting their own label on the same bottle of powder. They are both made by Wano, and everything appears to be the same. I used Schuetzen all this past year and am sold on it. It burns cleaner than Goex, leaving much less fouling behind, but costs about the same as Goex. I'll bet you'll be real happy with the stuff from Graf too.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Driftwood,

As I remember I looked at one of my cans of Graf and Sons and it had the Schuetzen name on the back label.  So I think they are the same powder.  I still like it regardless of what label is on it.

Besides, I like the bird on the label. . .

I've been using Graf's for about 4 years and love it, especially the price.   I usually make one or two trips a year through Missouri, north to south, and always detour to Mexico, Mo. and pick up multiple pounds or a case, and avoid the hazmat fee, making it about $9 - $10 per pound.  They even had it on sale this December for $7 a pound.   They also carry Swiss and Goex, so I experiment with other powder as well.

You guys make good powder reps .I bought a case of KIK powder last year almost gone now ..No problems with it ..but I have been wanting to try some Schuetzen for a while now but the price scares me off ..I beleive from reading your post here , I`ll give the Graf powder a try next order .

I think I may have to give this stuff a try.  Getting back into the BP after some years has sure been educational for this old soldier, lol.
