Howdy Gents

I just wondered if anybody new anything about a sxs shotgun , that was around in the 1870 to the early 1900's, my Ganddad used to talk about how much he loved this gun , he said the whloe name back then , but I was young and didn't pay too much attention to the last part , he call it a Green ? something sxs, I know there is a second name to this , and I'm just curious, to see if one of you pards might have a handle on this , I've been asking this question off and on for years now , with no results. So if you can think of it please let know , so I can put this to rest, it's one of those  things that just knaws at ya  :-[

Roosterman

Could have been an RE Green. They were exported from england and sold through hardware stores in the USA. I've had two of them, both hammer guns and they were excellent guns.

St. George

Likely a 'Greener' - a shotgun so popular at the time among the shotgun guards and lawmen that 'all' double-barrels were often referred to as 'Greeners'.

Most popular was the 10 guage version - a true street howitzer when the barrels were shortened.

Howdy Pards

Thanks pards , Roosterman, you were close , and I appreciate your reply, and I'm wondering if these two guns are the same , I think St. George, nailed it as soon as read Greener, it hit home, this is the gun, but are these two guns the same , and the name Greener being a kinda nick name for the R.E.Green ? just a thought, My Granddad thought this was the toughest, and best built SXS shotgun around at that time, I remember John Wayne making reference to it in one of his movies, but I can't remember which movie. Will Pards I thank both of you , and I can now put this to rest in my mine, let me know if you think both these names are the same company?  ???

Tkanks again Roosterman and St. George  :o 8)

Deadeye Don

Ten Wolves,   That would be "BIG JAKE" that you are thinking of.  Good movie and there were 2 "Greeners" in that movie as a matched set.  They had a prominent roll.  Regards.  Deadeye.

In  Wayne's "Cahill", there is a line about using a "Greener" too.

Professor Marvel

Much of the popularity of the WW Greener shotguns was probably due to the strength of the cross-bolt action, and it's famous chokes. From
WIkipedia:

"When W. Greener died in 1869, his son W.W. Greener merged the two companies into one. His next patent was the self-acting striker, followed by a famous cross-bolt mechanism produced as a single top bolt, in 1865. In 1873, this cross-bolt mechanism was combined with the bottom holding down bolts to produce the "Treble Wedge-Fast" breech action. The treble wedge-fast was one of the strongest breech actions ever invented and was widely copied by other manufacturers, after the patent rights expired.

The introduction of choke boring in 1874 is regarded as W.W. Greener's greatest achievement. It was this invention that made the firm's name famous. A discussion about this is in the section below.

In 1876, the firm introduced the Treble Wedge-Fast Hammerless Gun, otherwise known as the "Facile Princeps". This gun was cocked by the dropping of the barrels. This action was one of the strongest ever produced. The W.W. Greener company restarted production of Facile Princeps guns in 1998.[1]

In 1880, the firm produced a self-acting ejector for its guns, followed by the "Unique" ejector gun. These guns were designed to eject the spent cartridges when the gun was opened. Manufacture of the "Unique" ejectors stopped during the Second World War, and the company has recently begun to manufacture them again.[2]"
