double loop cross draw?

Howdy,

I'm working on my first holster, for my Uberti Remington 1875 clone.  I got a dvd from Hide Crafters by Jim Simmons (I think), it's pretty good.  But I want to make a change, and I'm not sure if it'll work.  The dvd shows how to make a strong side double loop holster, but I'd like to make a crossdraw double loop.

Has anyone done this, and if so, do you have some pictures of the holsters I could look at?  Especially pictures of the back side, I'm not real sure how the belt loop area should look.

Thanks!

Mike:

I'm assuming your "double loop" holster is, of course, skirted. Creating the angle for the crossdraw is done by shifting of the angle of the whole backskirt. The more that angle is shifted, the more severe the angle of the crossdraw.

Sorry I don't have a pic to illustrate what I'm talking about. Hopefully someone will have a sample pattern scanned where they can post an example. A picture here is worth a whole passel of words.

Here are a couple of pix of a pattern I've used many times. Can't find pix of the finished holsters.
Hope this helps.

I think that does help.  Thanks!

I didn't even think of taking a picture of my pattern and drawing on it to show where I'm having problems.  I'll do that tonight.

Ok, here's some pictures of my pattern:

I'm most worried about this area:

But I couldn't get a good picture of it.  Too white, I guess.

Have I taken off too much leather there?  Not enough?  Looks like Cowboy WC has a lot more leather right there in the hinge area.  I've got exactly three inches across the line of the hinge.

Here's picture of my pistol stuffed into it:

I think it's coming out ok.  I'll probably want to move the swell over a little bit, it does not look quite centered to me.  Sure am glad I tried it on paper first!  :)

It's hard to see if you allowed enough leather in the bend of the holster, where it goes over the belt, you want enough leather at the top of your holster , so that there isn't too much pressure, at the seam at the top of the opening of your holster , and you want to make sure you will have enough room between the top of your loop and the inside top of the skirt so that the width of your gun belt will fit , if you make this area too tight you won't be able get the belt in, if you'll notice on Cowboy's bottom picture, he has added material to the top of the holster , to get the right angle , if he wouldn't have added that material , the bend would be too deep into the bucket of the holster ,  you have the right idea , now you can just fine tune it , you can center the circle on the top loop a little , I think you're going to be fine , Cowboy helped me through a lot of this when I was getting started , come to think of it , he's still helping me, Hears a coulpe of pictures of two different crossdraws for a left hander that I made , maybe this will help too. :D ;D the double loop holster, has a longer drop from the top of the holster belt than the other, both have 28 degree's of angle.

I think if you add a little more width to the fold you will be good.
Always make paper  patterns til you are happy. Then transfer them to cardboard or file folder to keep as
a hard copy.
Lately I've been using red painters paper for my patterns. You can get a roll of the stuff for about $10 at
Home Depot or Lowes.

Thanks WC!

I marked up the previous picture of the pattern:

So should I add a little more on the red area or the blue or both?

Thanks,

3 inches is Ok, 3 1/2 would be better.

Looks like ya got WAY to much angle on that holster, don't think it would be SASS legal.

I'll check it again, but I measured it before as between 25 and 30 degrees off of vertical.

Oh crap.  I did do it wrong, it was between 65 and 70 degrees.  I'm not quite sure how I did that.  hmmm...oh well, needed to make another pattern anyway, they keep getting better :)

Grrr...hate it when I mess something up.  The second time I measured the angle way wrong.  it was actually closer to 35 degrees. Well, I think I measured it correctly now. I drew a line perpendicular to the crease line where the sights are and measured from that line to the fold line.

On the latest pattern I've made it...17 degrees.  Seemed a nice angle, and if I'm off a little bit it should not disqualify me.

Thanks!
