I am currently making a double loop holster for a friend and want to carve this in an oak leaf design. However in my limited library, I can find no pictures of period holsters carved in this design. Is the oak leaf design a modern design? Any help will be appreciated.

Earlier designs were generally floral-carved - and-fish-scale and basket-weave seem to be a more modern style.

The only oak-leaf carving I ever ran across came after the turn of the century - and that was on a hatband, not a holster.

I'm assuming you've reviewed 'Packing Iron' - so look at what was offered through the big mail-order houses, like Sears, Roebuck & Co., and Montgomery Wards.

Often, they describe the available decoration.

Good Luck.

Quick Fire:

If you decide to do the oak leaf pattern there is a good one in Al Stohlman's " How to make holsters"  book.  I recently did one for a pard in our area.

When I do an oak leaf pattern, it is usually just a modification based on Al Stolhman's that Outrider mentioned. That pattern can make either pointed or rounded leaves equally well and both look good.

Thanks guys, I've looked at that pattern and really like it, but I am trying to stay within the time period of 1865-1899 so I don't think that I'll do it.
