I'd like to find some info, history about the moon (also referred to as a crescent), over the 5-pointed star (usually the point of the star is up, like the Texas star). I know the New Orleans police dept. adapted this design, but that's not what I'm looking for here. You see a lot of scarf slides with this design, for instance. Anyone know anything about this design for sure?

St. George

Then why not go to your search engine and type in 'star and crescent moon', and see what you'll find?

It's 'not' the symbol of Islam - but it's seen on many flags with the Crescent Moon on the left side of the Star.

It was first used by the Ottomans in that configuration.

It was also used by the Federals during the Civil War in opposite configuration - and served as the Corps badge of the 7th Corps.

As you know - NOPD uses it, but New Orleans is referred to as the 'Crescent City'

It's an ancient design - but there's a wealth of information on it.

Thank's, St. George, I've done several Google searches, they all basically come up with the Islamic symbol with the moon on the left side of the star. Have not yet found anything in my searches that I want. I thought I heard once that some southwest Indian tribe adapted this design in some way? I bet someone around here will know what I'm looking for.

There are variants - in placement of the pieces, and in number of stars as well.

Go to www.dogpile.com instead of Google.

You'll find more - depending on how you word your search.

Google - while popular - doesn't always cover all the bases, but this site amalgamates a number of search engines, and things can usually be found.

Remember too, that www.wikipedia.com is a do-it-yourself 'encyclopedia' and some information is suspect.

Boot

I always understood it to be a Moorish design from North Africa taken with them to Spain where it can still be seen and then in turn to the New world making it's way up through Mexico.
