Caliber?

Probably .38 rocket ball.  It's kind of a hollow based bullet with powder in the base and a percussion cap as a primer.  It was the first attempt at a self contained cartridge.

38 rocket? interesting

The action looks wicked short.

Forty Rod

They also made some in .41 RB.

About half of all Volcanics were engraved and about half had nickeled receivers...not necessarily the same half.

Notice the rear sight placement.  Some Henrys also had the rear sight on the reciever.

It was wicked short. I had the peasure of handling an original Volcanic a few years ago. It was about the size of a boy's 22.

Read this thread. Lots of information, including pictures of Volcanics adn information about the rocket ball ammo. There is a terrific photo, contributed by Henry4440  comparing a Volcanic to a bunch of Henrys on the second page of the thread.

That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!
