I have been "rolling my own" gun leather and gear for a number of years. Recently I got a copy of Packing Iron and want to make a couple of  "California Pattern" style holsters. The construction appears to be straight forward and perhaps easier than what I have been doing except for the end plugs. I have no idea how they are sewn in.  Any help or instruction for doing this would be greatly appreciated.  I hand sew with either a sewing awl or needles.

Also, it appears that most of the holsters of the periods covered in Packing Iron were unlined.  Would that be your assessment also?

BTW I posted a New Member Introduction in the Greetings forum a few days ago.

I am looking forward to learning a lot here and contributing where I can.

Thanks

Howdy Whiskey Creek,

Welcome to CAS City and the Leather Shop.

There is an excellent instructional DVD out there by Chuck Burrows called "Frontier Holsters". There is a section in the DVD that shows in great detail how to install "end plugs". You can check out this DVD under the Videos section right here in CAS City. I've been making my own leather for about two years now and this DVD has taken my work up  several notches. You will also get excellent advice and tips from the Pards here on CAS City not only on Leather Working but every phase of Cowboy Action shooting.

Welcome, pard. Looking forward to seeing you around these parts. There are some good DVD's and books on holsters. Like Johnny said, Chuck's is a good one. Tandy also has Al Stohlman's How To Make Holsters and, as I recall, it shows how to sew in a plug.

Also, if they're still available get the pattern pack by Brazos Jack, aka Jim Simmons, for the Civil War Flap holster.  He has a few pages in the instructions on doing toe plugs.

Just got my copy of "Frontier Holsters".  I'm still on the first disc, there's just so much information in it.

Thanks guys!  I ordered the Frontier Holster DVD set.  I have been aware of the Wild Rose Trading Company for some time now, in fact it is just 40 some odd miles from me, but never made the connection between it, "Nolan Sackett" and Chuck Burrows.

I am a great admirer of his work.
