Gentlemen,
On page 83 of "Packing Iron", is a picture of a pair of California pattern holsters with silver end caps. As I'm trying to re-create these, I would like to know if there are any places that I could buy a sheet of material to make these caps. Thank you.

I know a pard who had a pair of slim-jims made with end caps, the maker used a pair silver communion (sp) cups purchased off of ebay. Hope this helps.

If you were to check the yellow pages in Lincoln or Omaha - you should find a 'manufacturing jeweler' or a jeweler's supply house.

You can buy sheet sterling silver from them - then cut to length and create the circular plug.

It sounds more difficult than it is, and if you can silver-solder - and have some patience and a template - you're set.

Alternatively - look for something similar in the way of sterling shot glasses, baby cups and such.

Were I doing it - I'd inscribe a simple border line or two - for decoration.

Good Luck.

Small world.  I am planning on the same holsters.  Here are a couple of silver suppliers that have been recommended to me.

Ain't like the old days, but it'll do!

I saw some on the wire about a year ago made from sterling napkin rings.  Been looking for just the right rings ever since.

I bought two antique engraved silver napkin rings at a local antique mall recently. They cost about $19 each. Just make sure you get one with the proper diameter for your holsters.

I've thought about doin' holsters with silver endcaps before, but never got ambitiouse enough to make 'em.  Now that I'm horsin' around with casting buckles and such, I've thought about having some endcaps cast.  I've also been tryin' to figure out how I'd go about makin' a silver throat and toe for a Schefield Bowie knife scabbard.  For endcaps, I figure you could make due with two different sizes:  One for muzzleloading pistols, the other for cap 'n ball pistols.  They would have to be plenty big, but then the holster pattern could be laid-out and patterned to fit the endcap.  Just thinkin' out loud...
