Question on the .56-50 Infantry rifle (Photos added)
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:07:30 PM »
Happy New Year  ;)

I got a question that wanted to ask for awhile. Did anyone notice that there is a gap or space where the end of the barrel is secured into the receiver in either their Spencer carbine or infantry rifle? Mine does. Everytime after I shot my infantry rifle, I have to use a small screwdriver to pick off the black powder residue. Is that normal  ??? ???

(PS: Here are the pictures of the gap that I am talking about)

I've noticed the same thing with my rifle in 56-50.  Crud loves to collect in there and its a pain in the neck to remove.

If you are talking about the recesses on either side of where the case rim sits then you need to anneal your brass.  ;)

A photo of the problem area would be a big help to better see what/and where the gap is.

Up loaded the photos...hope they help.

Stephen, did you notice whether your infantry rifle has a rough surface (uneven) inside the receiver? You could see it in my 2nd picture that inside of the receiver is not "flat" or smooth.

As I feel it with my finger, I could sense some area is up and some area is down. Don't know if I could smooth it with a very fine grit sand paper or not; and whether doing so will affect the function of the leveling and loading?

Also, did anyone experience "blow back"? I was shooting my rifle yesterday and In one occasion, I could feel something hitting my forehead after I fired a round. It kind of scare me. It has happened before once or twice. What is the cause? Should I take my rifle to a gunsmith to have it look at? Any suggestion would be appreciated :)

Fox Creek Kid, How to do the brass anneal? I have never done it before...what tools and precedure are required? Thanks for answering my question.

Do a search for "anneal" in this forum as there are tons of posts telling how to do it.  ;)

The inside of the receiver on my rifle is a bit rough but, 700+ rounds later, I can't say as its hurting anything.
