I just talked to Walt.  He has the prototype and it functions flawlessly.  Also, it seems 45 Colt cowboy loads will fit also, not just Schofield and 45 Cowboy special.  He has Richards stlye ejector assemblies (the ones for the 1861s work perfectly)  The first run is being finished and should be available soon.  I am getting number one, so I will keep you posted.  I need to pick up a Pietta 1860 first!  Anyone got one for cheap?

Talked to Walt again this morning.

He will have 10 Uberti and 15 (actually 14 since I get the first one) Pietta 1860 sets ready in about two weeks.  They will come with a gated breech ring (which can also be used as a drop in without cutting a channel) and the cylinder.  He also has Richards style ejector rod assemblies for an extra charge if you want to cut a channel.

The Pietta model will should take cowboy 45 Colt, but the uBerti won't as the Uberti cylinder is .040 shorter.  You should be able to face of the barrel and switch to a Pietta percussion cylinder and Kirst.

44 Caliber Pietta 1851 owners alert:  These will fit you 1851 44 caliber models and make them .45s!

I would order early as they will go fast! ;D

Would you ask him if he would be willing to make a 44 Colt version if requested?

TL,

Along with Black River Smiths and Seth Hawkins question's would you please ask Mr. Kirst if he ever plans on a 1862 Pocket Police conversion? This has to be one of the best looking revolvers and yet not a single company makes a conversion for it or of it.   ??? I just don't understand? ???

Thanks very much.

Capt. John.

TL.  Does the Kirst use a staked firing pin in the new gated models?  I know R&D uses a screw in plate to retain the firing pin.  I have heard the Kirsts have the fring pin crimped in and some people had problems with them.  Trying to decide which to get for my Uberti 51 Navies.

WOW!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I talked to Walt again this morning.

The 1860 and 1861 breech rings are color case hardened and have a gate.  There will be 14 Pietta and 9 Ubertis in this first pre-production run.  The 1860 set (ring and cylinder are $279.95.  The ejector rod assemblies are $125 (and can be ordered separately) In the future they will be sold by VTI, Buffalo Arms, and River Junction trading Co.

HOWEVER, since this is a pre-production test run, buyers will contact me and I will be compiling a list and forwarding it to Walt.  He will contact you and give you instructions on payment.  I am not making a cent on this, but am doing tjhis to help Walt, since it was at my continuous pestering that he did this! ::)

I need you to contact me via EMAIL at <imarangemaster@yahoo.com>.  I need your name, address, how many you want, if you want an ejector, etc.  THIS IS FOR 1860 SETS ONLY!  Other models, go through the retailers.

All orders will be met, as it is a sure thing that when the first 25 are gone, a full production run will start.  The first 25 cylinders are being sent for bluing, and the breech rings and ejectors are already done.

Walt Kirst is a day late & a dollar short here IMO. By the time you buy a cap 'n ball, his ring & ejector AND pay someone (who?) to machine the ejector groove you would be dollars ahead to have bought an Uberti conversion WITH authentic roll engraving which, the last I knew, Kirst does not do. I think that the Uberti "factory" Remington conversion has cut into his market & he's trying to regain some. That's fine & dandy BUT the real market IMO is for AUTHENTIC conversions and to do that Walt will have to start making guns which I assume he does not want to do. Uberti offers an authentic '60 Army 2nd Model Richards & a '60 Army Richards Mason. The only thing really left is an authentic 1st Model Richards (unless you count the obscure Thuer). Also, to make an authentic '61 Navy conversion you can't just slap on an ejector. There is a LOT of machine work.

I don't know Walt from a bale of hay but I know how to read a market. Ultimately he is going to be forced to start making conversions "a la" R & D or be satisfied eating the crumbs left by Uberti. Just my two cents.

Seth, you keep talking about CCH the rings and gate. Plz excuse my ingnorance, but what does CCH stand for?
Deadeye Dick

Oops, just read the next thread and it sounds like CCH stands for casehardening. Plz correct me if I'm wrong.

You can use it like a drop in like an R&D (though it looks better than an R&D) or make a conversion.  You can dremel out a channel in an afternoon.  I like having the 1860 for my Civil War Cavalry re-enacting and the .45 Colt for CAS.  Two guns in one, just like my 1858 with Kirst.

It seems like Cimarron has been trying to get an adequate supply of Richards type II for several years.  All of the importers are getting Uberti Open tops of any kind at a trickle. Pietta is shipping 1860s all the time.  Cabelas has a ton in stock right now at $209.

Just my humble opinion.

PS I'd sell my Yugo M70AB2 (AK) under-folder before I would sell my Uberti 1858 and the Kirst Konverter and ejector rod!

If the first 25 pre-productions sell as he anticipates, he will do a larger production run, including .44 Colts (for healed or hollow based bullets).  They will also be five shot (with SASS legal safety chamber) because the original conversions were switched to double pronged  cylinder hands to accommodate the shortened ratchets on the cylinder face.  All original and replica 1860s have single prongs on the hand.

Great suggestion  about the conversion for the 62 pocket police, I assume that it would also work in the pocket navy .
I would buy one or 2 of those babies.

Walt also has the same type (gated Konvertor rings that do double duty for ported or non-ported) conversions coming out real soon for Walkers and for Dragoons (all models). Is Uberti ???
