Have any of you used Pecard leather care for antique items?

Yes - for Old Western leather and for Militaria.

I've found it to be excellent - and my only 'problem' is finding it without having to order from the factory.

That, and 'Lexol' are easy-to-use products and effective.

Plus - 'Pecards' works just great on your boots and gloves in inclement weather.

Vaya,

I bought a can of Pecards many years ago when it first became available.  It may be a good dressing for boots and harness but for holsters, saddlery and other tack, it isn't the best choice.  It will darken a good piece of leather and with continued applications, it will turn leather black.  Unless they changed their formula, it was a petrolium based product and had no lanolin or animal product in it.  Lexol works quite well and won't darken leather to the extreme, like Pecards.  It's easy to apply and soaks in rapidly.  I have almost 1000 pieces of antique cowboy gear and rarely use anything on it.   But when I do, the only thing I ever use is paste saddle soap.  It is a lanolin product, it won't change color, it never turns sour and keeps all of my antique gear looking great.  I apply with a slightly damp, clean cotton cloth and very sparingly.  I only do this about once a year.  If you over apply any preservative or cleaner it will definately do more harm than good.  If I'm photographing some of my pieces, I will often use another cleaner, preservative dressing called Leather Gold.  This stuff has carnuba wax which really makes the color and finish come out in old leather.  Some of the items we have in Packing Iron were dressed with this product before they were photographed.  This is my own opinion and feel others should do what they think is best.

Adios,
Buck

I have also heard of Lexol products.  Thanks for your input Buck and St. George.
