Hi Folks

I have just joined this site but with the help and encouragement of one of the members I seem to be finding my way around. Not bad for someone who is computer illiterate!

Just bought a Spencer, a new toy. Always wanted one since I was a wee fella, whenever that was. At the moment still dont know how to add pictures but never mind! I have only had it a few days so it will sit beside my 73 Winchester, Colt Lightning, Warners Civil war carbine and a Whitney Kennedy so will have good friends I daresay.
It is a Model of 1865 with Stabler Cutoff. I was disappointed when I bought it to find that it has a rather nasty chip out of the breech where the extractor goes. If I can find some way of shooting it will the missing chip and associated crack extending beyond it do nefarious things to my new pride and joy?

During the Maori Wars out here in New Zealand one of these Spencers was used by the Maori chief Te Kooti against the British Army and colonists. He was the best armed of anyone in these wars as the 'goodies' only had Callisher and Terrys and later on Sniders were issued at about the same time as the wars were drawing to a close.

minerotago, welcome to CAS city.  Be sure to check out the other boards as well.  I look forward to reading more of your posts.

As for the "chip" in your Spencer's breech, I believe there is a thread regarding this very thing a ways back.

Hi Will Ketchum - yes it was that very thread that drew my attention to the fault in the breech but it does appear to be a fault common to other Spencers. Mayube I should look at it from the point of view that if I got that old with only a few chips I could count myself lucky.
I saw that thread and having a natural curiousity, which often gets me into trouble, I just had to have a look and there it was. I had actually seen that there was a gap there when I bought the guna nd tohught that it had been drilled out at the time so was a fault in engineering or designed with the gap there so that the side of the extractor sat against the shell.
