I finished the loading trough, reshaped the hammer and cleaned up the rough casting on the back and top. Then I hand checkered it. I also reshaped the offensive lower curve in the rammer "web".



Next will be draw filing and sanding to remove all offensive markings. Then caliber stamping on the frame, inspection marks, conversion numbers and refinishing (with slight unfinishing for aged look).

I have extra levers so this was kind of an experiment
It's interesting how it profiles like an 1860 Colt, that's why I put it on the Adler book!

I'm getting close to a dozen different '58's  so I wanted something a bit different here. I think I'm going to do the same thing to a 5 1/2 inch Pietta as I just don't like the look of the "full length" rammer web on them.

Anyone else shooting heel base 44's in original or aftermarket conversions?

Yes, I picked up Walt's .44 Rem conversion w/loading gate (chambered in .44 Colt)



I load the outside lubricated 248gr heeled bullet
thrown from a mold I got from Bernie Rowles at Old West Molds.
Its drive bands are approx. .452, and shoots pretty good out of my stock  5.5" Uberti '58.
I crimp with a Lee Factory crimp die modified by Bernie to crimp the heeled bullet.

The cylinder isn't on Walt's website , but is available by special order.  Ole Halfway Creek Charlie was the one
who first got me interested in this old traditional round.

Walt and I are pretty good phone acquaintances. I have made him a couple of period correct civilian type holster belts out of silk fire hose. We do some swappin' and arm chair engineerin'

WhoF ... er, Hoof Hearted, I 'specially like the Beals shaped rammer, but I don't find it "offensive," 

Now, since I am an NCOWS fan, we need to find out if any of the NMAs might have actually been issued with that style rammer, so I could have an excuse to do that to MINE!

If you learn anything on this, be sure to post it here. I am also curious and will do some looking. If it was done, somewhere there would be a surviving example. I'd do mine just to have something a little different provided it is verifiable.

I did some searching on the net and found that a bunch of the NMA's have narrower webs on the loading lever. None seemed to have that cool Beals style, though. Here's a pic showing the loading lever web on my shortened Uberti, an 1863 vintage New Model Army and an 1861 Old Model Army. Some originals were like the replicas but I really like the others. I guess I'll at least shave mine down to look slimmer as the photos of originals show. I also scanned a photo of a New Model Police from Adler's Metallic Cartridge Conversions (p. 63) that has that same slim-profile web. I can see that I will at least shave mine down like that if we can't substantiate the Beals-type web, although I like it a lot. Thanks for getting me started, Hoof-Hearted.

I was gonna turn the round part of the rammer back to a point right before the web then flatten the sides (like a Beals) but I'm thinking of leaving this one like this (because of the notch for the ejector tab).

Thanks for the link, HH. That says it all. I did reshape the shorty one that came with one of my 5 1/2" pistols and stick it on my match gun as a trial to see how much work it would be and how it looks. Took about an hour to do. When I re-do the full-length one, I'll take a little more care and it will be about 3/4" longer due to the fact that the full-size rammers have a longer web. Here's a photo.

Mine is a shorty like the good Marshal's, 'tho not as short.  I think it'd be cool with a Beals-type rammer, but I'll have to continue looking.  Sounds as if NO WAY did any of the Beals parts last until the NMA time - which is what my gun is.

Will a Beals rammer fit on a NMA? It seems possible that a field repair might have been necessary and a Beals rammer installed, provided they were interchangable.

I spent a little over an hour today and did both match pistol webs to look more like the originals with the thinner web. I took the trial rammer off the pistol I posted a pic of yesterday and replaced it with the full-length one. It'll do but if I ever find a Beals style NMA photo, I'll start carving.
