Anyone know what this cartidge designation means?

I'm guessing 44 Central Fire Winchester?
In lieu of using 44-40 or 44 WCF

I'm guessing by the time Remington produced 1890's they were done with their own 44 cartridges

It probably is Cental Fire Winchester. My 1890 is stamped the same and of course, fires .44/40's.
I think that remington stopped making arms in .44 remington around 1887.

The photo of the stamping is very interesting. The letter "C" looks very weak, the same letter is very weakly stamped on my 1890.
I wonder if it was a defective stamp?  Thanks for the photo.

You know it's very cool to look into the history of the way the gun manufacturers and the ammo makers designated their chamberings/cartridges. Like high school jealousy

I find the periods after each letter to be very interesting.

I am "building" a couple of NMA revolvers into my interpretation, sort of Experimentals so to speak. I have already bought full stamp sets in 1/16 and 1/8 inch. I think I will designate the 44 (Colt or Russian) as 44 C. F. on the frame or maybe the trigger guard.

I played around a bit with those label scans you sent and made wrap around labels and box ends outta them for cardboard boxes. You know the old kind like plain white Winchester or reload boxes. If you or anyone else wants the file, I can send it to ya. I used New Print shop and it is in a proprietary file for that program. I might could try to change it to a jpeg or bitmap They are to scale and I bought 8 1/2 X 11 blank label paper. All you do is print and cut to fit!
