Have you ever seen this before?

It appears to be as old as the gun. My guess is the milling was to facilitate capping. I have not seen this milling feature addressed befor in my reading, so I wondered what ya'll might know!

If you are referrimg to the double cut in the breech behind the cylinder, that is the most common shape I see in books on Remington.
