R&D conversion cylinder is 5 shot for 1860 Army.  How does one handle the requirement to keep the hammer on an empty chamber, load 4 and then reload at the stage?

Since you have to take the cylinder out to load and reload, loading four and adding the fifth on the clock really isn't feasible.  The cylinder has five extra locking notches so you can set the hammer down between chambers.

This oughta 'splain how it all works for the Pietta models - with the Uberti models being essentially identical.

Jeff,  So using the "safety" notch on the cylinder would be "legally safe" for use in an NCOWS match also as opposed to having the hammer down on an empty cylinder?

I've used mine going on two years... with nary a raised eyebrow  :)
And these are the same RO's that wouldn't allow my 56/56 Spencer...  :(

Major,  Is that for NCOWS matches?

The ROs wont let you use your 56-56 for rifle targets???

Don, If I read the rules right, yes it's OK for us in NCOWS.  (I think Major 2 IS an NCOWS member.  ;) )

Also, yes, most of the "Spencer Brouhaha" silliness WAS due to the ammo - which has pretty well subsided except at ranges with exceptionally soft steel targets ... and some short-sightedness.  ::)  Certainly NOT at Modoc or Martinsville, I'm proud to say!  ;D ;D

I re-checked the rules, and here is a PARTIAL quote:

Colt Bisley models distributed by EMF, Navy Arms, and Cimarron.

Colt 1873 Target models distributed by Navy Arms

Colt 1872 Open Top Models distributed by EMF, Cimarron, and Navy Arms.

Conversion Models distributed by Cimarron, Navy Arms, & others.

Ruger Full-size Vaquero and new Ruger Vaquero

Remington 1875 and 1890 SA manufactured by Armi San Marco, Beretta, & Uberti.

Smith & Wessons distributed by Navy Arms, Cimarron and others.

Conversion cylinders by Kirst and R&D

******************************************************

I put the key phrase in bold, italics and red, but that pretty much says it all.  However, it doesn't specifically address the safety notch issue, but I KNOW that our authenticity Committee and Judge take everything into consideration before making a decision.

That leads me to believe that the notches ARE allowed, as engineered by R&D or Kirst.

If anyone can add to this, feel welcome.  I went to the website (NCOWS) and grabbed most of the paragraph and pasted it here.

Thanks Jeff.  That is not real specific, but seems to point in the direction that you can "park" your hammer on the safety notch and NOT on an empty cylinder.  So as the safety officer at Martinsville, you would be ok with that?

Well ... ummm ! no I'm a want ta be NCOWS member... but I'm a one man show, if there are any NCOWs members in Florida anymore they sure don't respond ....I've tried for 2 years   :(
I resigned from SASS years ago personal reasons  .. the range does not require membership in SASS... just a member of the range it's private and short-sighted target damage wise .

Thanks, everybody.  I see no reason why I can't convert my 60 Army (read: hire a pro) and use this as my second revolver after I purchase my new one.  Seems pretty realistic to imagine my character keeping the cap & ball from the War, having a conversion done, and then up-grading to the Colt...

Until I do the conversion, though, I couldn't interpret any rules as precluding my shooting cap & ball from one holster and cartridge from the other.  Are there?  I'll check with the local club rules if there are exceptions.

Stay safe.

Deadeye Don

Powder,   As long as both guns are approved by SASS, NCOWS or whatever group you shoot with, that is fine and in my mind would be kinda cool.
