Howdy,
Does any one know if a R&D conversion cylinder for a Uberti or Pietta will fit an ASM 1860 Army? I emailed Taylor's and they do not have any for the ASM 1860 but they list some for the ASM 1858 Rem.  I emailed R&D and called but did not get an answer. If anyone has one for sale I would be interested.
Thanks, Greeley

Greeley,

I haven't tried a conversion cylinder in my ASM 1860 C&B, but needed to replace the cylinder a few years ago. I found one of my Pietta cylinders to be pretty close fit, so I ordered one.

I had to remove a little material from the rear of the barrel to get er to spin freely. The bolt notches are not perfectly aligned (fore to aft), but locks up well enough. I'm sure I could fit a new cylinder bolt and reshape the tip to fit nicely, but haven't bothered.

Hope this helps.
Best to ya!

Thanks for the reply Slim. I Got to talk to the guy at R&D (can't remember his name) and he gave me some dimensions for the Uberti and Pietta cylinders. My ASM cylinder seems to be real close to the same overall length as the Uberti. He also told me that there was gated conversion for the 1860 coming out from R&D after the first of the year sometime in Janurary. I think I may wait for that one.

Not sure... but I seem to remember some guys on this forum saying the Uberti cylinder will fit the ASM. Try a search and I think you will find the thread.

If this helps any, I have an ASM cylinder that works in my Ubertis.  More likely to fit the Uberti than the Pietta in most cases, anyway.

The ASM and Pietta 1860s are just about 100% interchangeable.

The ASM/Traditions is a little closer to the cylinder than the Pietta. I just ordered a conversion cylinder from Midway (Birthday discount) and the R&D is REALLY close. (its scraping on the ASM, actually) I am going to take a wooden dowel with the same OD as the narrow part on my cylinder and use it to remove just a few thou from the area under the cylinder. (then cold blue it)

It fits my Pietta just fine, but, my 1860s have a bit more over travel on the bolt that what I would like. (been meaning to do this for a while, now I have a good reason)
