In the course of doing some case prep work last night, I started measuring case lengths, at random, of the Starline 56-50 cases I had on hand.  Wow.  Talk about a variation!  I have cases as short as 1.146" and as long as 1.160"!  What are you guys using for a "trim to" length for your brass?  I am inclined to go with 1.150" or so.  Sure, that won't catch the shorter ones, but it will be closer than 1.160".  Your thoughts?

You're wasting your time. #1 it's not a 6mm PPC benchrest rifle. #2 it's not a high pressure round. Starline cases in all calibers are short. OAL is far more important in this case (no pun intended). Anneal the case mouths, size, bell, load & enjoy.  ;)

Yeah, I am probably being too picky.  How are you annealling your case mouths?

Do a search of this forum as it has been discussed countless times.  ;)

I put all my brass I am going to anneal into a pan with a shallow amount of water to just come up 1/2 way on the spencer cases and then use a MAP torch "Benzomatic" to heat up the cases one at a time in a dimmly lit are of the house.

I heat them just enough so that they mouth's "glow" a bit and then tip them over.

Some folks dip them in a lead casting pot while holding it with a pair of pliers. I did this ONCE and had to fish out my case from a pot of molten lead... NOT how I wanted to spend the afternoon.

You'd be surprised how well the 56-50 shoots off the bench.

I trim 0.01" less than the case length found at http://members.shaw.ca/cstein0/rimiden.htm

I've only had to trim once, just to tidy things up - new brass, you know.  Since then, I just neck size.  I've fired all of my cases 6 times now, annealing before each loading & then neck sizing.  The little boogers have not grown a thousandth of an inch.
Ain't got to where I'm going, but I'm past where I been.

Where are you folks getting your case trimmers from???

Lyman from Buffalo Arms....the one that takes shell holders.  (The "Classic"?)
