Hey ya'll!  Has anyone seen the holster in"Sixguns" by Elmer Keith that has a leather tab, with a hole in it, for the firing pin to fit into when the hammer is lowered ,in lieu of a thong? Looks like a pretty good idea. Supposedly you could carry six in the wheel with that setup if you were so inclined.      Cuzzin Jack

NO! NO! NO!  In the first place, using the tab-with-hole-for-the-firing pin, it is necessary to partially or completely cock the gun while still in the holster. IMNSHO, that is an UNSAFE PRACTICE in anybody's estimation!  A leather tab can compress, possibly enough to result in the firing pin sitting on the primer.  Or, if the hammer spur were snagged by brush or clothing (presuming the top of the holster is cut low enough to expose it), it could come back just enough to pop the tab loose and allow the hammer to slip back with enough force to ignite the primer.

Tabs or hammer thongs are to be relied upon ONLY to retain the gun in the holster.  ALWAYS keep the hammer on Colt's system (including clones) single actions down on the empy hammer.  If you feel five shots aren't enough, use a gun with a safety interlock, such as Ruger's transfer bar.

While I have the utmost respect for Elmer Keith, he was NOT always right!

I have to agree with the hammer down on an empty chamber on guns without transfer bars. There are just too many ways to set the thing off unintentionally like TR said.

Hey ya'll. Wasn't suggesting that six chambered was a good idea, was just wondering if anyone remembered that holster.                                                                                                                                                                                          Cuzzin Jack
