Howdy!

I was doing some routine maintenance on my 1858 NMA Remington that I've done so much work on.  It's NOW a really nice gun, if I say so myself. (it's on the right.  ;))

Well, I was going to switch nipples and the durn nip BROKE in half on the threaded part!  :o  I attempted to remove it with an E-Z out.  Too hard - the thing laughed at me.  So, onto the drill press I go.  Well, due to the fact of the nipples being machined in at an angle, and me not having proper tools or hold downs (and perhaps not enough skill) I broke numerous drills and ended up having the drill point wander off into the threaded part of the cylinder wall.  And the remaining portion of the nipple STILL won't come out.  (By the way - in case you're wondering, yes - I DO remove them EACH time I shoot for cleaning and use a good thread lube to keep it from locking up.  I'm sure it was a defective part.)

Here's whut I need.  Do any of y'all who have converted yer Pietta Remingtons to cartridge guns have any C&B cylinders sittin' around collecting dust that ya might wanna part with?  I'm not made of money, but I'll do the best I can.  Shucks - I'd buy a Kirst or an R&D cylinder if I could afford it, but that's another dream for the future.

I certainly can still use mine as a five-shot cylinder, but I'd like to have a good one.  Or more.

Thanks.  (I'm gonna post this on the SCORRS site as well as the Gunsmith site, so bear with me.)

I think your solution is the best one Horse.  There ought to be a lot of unused C&B cylinders laying around.  Probably would cost more to have a smith extract the broken nipple, weld in the hole, drill it out again and cut new threads.

I'll keep my eyes open.

Good luck.

I would think a brand new cylinder could be pick up at one of the dealers also.  I am not sure I quite understood, did you adventually get the broken nipple out?  If that's the case, You only load 5 at the range ennyways.  So it's still useable till you replace it.

Jeff,  Have you contacted Taylors to see how much a new cylinder would cost?  Dixie gun works might have them too.  They may not be that much.

Howdy boys,
Cabelas sells a replacement cylinder for Remington NMAs for 39.99 new. Could try that-Troublesome

If he can buy it for 39.99 new from Cabelas that would be a great deal.

Jeff,  Andy at Fall Creek sells them for 69.95.

Thanks, all.

I've checked and the ones NEW @ Cabela's are the best price for NEW, but I was hoping for a bargain from someone who isn't gonna use their C&B cylinder(s) anymore at a USED price.  ;)  The $40 price new is half whut I paid for the gun and it's only in fair shape (looks wise), so a new cyl. might look odd.  Kinda like gilding a ... well, you know.  ;D  It's actually a pretty good candidate for an antiquing job, but I'd rather have it look well-used and happy - not ancient.

Yeah, Rooster, the broken bit is un-removeable (by me) but I can still use the factory one at matches since I'd only load 5 - but there's the occasional reload (usually 1 round, which as a C&B I'd load all chambers, and cap the 6th one on the clock.)  This is what I CAN"T do with the existing cylinder and why I'm trying to find a couple of cheapies.

Antiquing? I had heard so much about the benefits of the Windex with vinegar that I bought a bottle.
I sprayed my 1860s down with it really well. Got sidetracked and forgot them for a couple of hours.
Pretty well antiqued. Took most of the blue off. I got under momma's counter and found the straight vinegar and finished the job. I was going to brown them but they look kinda cool in the white.

Nozzie, thanks for the tip.  IF I decide to make it look old, I think that's whut I'll do, but the jury's still out on the antiquing.  A small point here: regular or white vinigar?  Or does it matter?

Major 2, thanks.

Pitspitr, there is a new Cabela's opening up in the near future, but I don't know when.  They might not have any "bargains" in the corner  ;) ;) but perhaps they'll have some grand-opening bargains I can look for.  Thanks for the tip.
