I was in Petsmart yesterday and saw the bags of "pet litter". I bought a bag of walnut "pet litter". I ran around 100 badly GOEX stained 41 mag case for 4 hours and it cleaned them nicely.
Just as nice as if the bag had said tumbling media rather than pet litter.    :)

Some outfits call it lizard litter. Still just ground nut shells. I like to buy
it at a feed store here locally, big bag think mabey 50 lbs. Regardsm, Jim

From time to time you may have to screen it to get rid of the fines.  I've used it and it is great, but it breaks down and if you have removed yer primers, it surely plugs the primer holes tighter than a nun's . . . .

Also, you can use some Brasso with it with good effect.  I've tumbled thousands or rounds of cruddy brass and gotten it back to respectable with such media.  Watch those primer holes.

However. . . . Here is the pitch, when you want the very best, never wears out, always works great, quickest on the planet, . . take a look at Ceramic Porcelain.  Yup, I'm prejudiced, I sell it and I use it.  But, nothing works better, lasts longer or costs less over time than CP media. . .

Ok, off the stump.  You gathered the crowd, I just thought I'd do a little sellin' . . . . (Scene from Buch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)

Rice(not minute rice) also works very well for cleaning brass cheaply if you can't get ahold of walnut or crushed corn cob.

I've trained my wife to save the used dryer sheets. I run a used sheet with every batch I tumble and it stays ahead of the dust.

Hey Noz, that sounds like a good tip. In fact I am heading out to the shop to clean some brass in a few minutes. I am gonna give that a try. I bought a bag of some kind of bedding mix at Petsmart and it is not the same as the stuff I had bought there before. This stuff is dusty and has a lot of crushed shells, probably walnut, but really dusty. The stuff I had before was more of a corn cob mix and may have been called habit trail mix. Next time I buy some I am going to read the ingredients and see if I can get back to the corn cob type stuff. Trouble is the stuff lasts so long and I hate to through anything out if it works, but the dust is bad.
I know, I will get a hamster or something and use the stuff I have now for bedding and get the better stuff for my vibrating cleaner, problem solved  ;D

So Nozzle, thanks for the tip, but I really want to hear more about how you trained your wife. Now that really has my interest up. It seems that around my place it is reversed and I am the one under training.  ::)

Used the walnut pet litter for about a month and threw it out and went back to my used corncob.
Seemed like it lost all its cutting ability very quickly.

Ok so scratch the pet litter then!!   ;)

Never had a problem with pet store ground cob.  Pour a l'il Brasso in it, let it run a few minutes then dump the brass in there when I want it shiney.

Where I screwed up, big time, was dumpin' oat meal in there.  Bought it for sumthin' else 'n it didn't werk out fer that either.  Figgered 'what the hell' 'n dumped it in the tumbler.  It took on the consistency of talc.

A total hoot gettin' the brass out.  Had this big cloud ah dust blowin' everywhere in the garage.  I got a black truck I'm real particular 'bout too.  Got that mess all o'er it.  Some of my brass still has white letters in the headstamps even after bein' loaded, shot, dumped in soap 'n water then tumbled again in somethin' more suitable.

I  like my brass clean.  Not just the outside, but inside and inside the primer pockets.  My main match brass cleans up pronto.  In less than 4 hours from the time I get back to the ranch from a match, my brass is cleaner than new and twice as pretty.

Ceramic Porcelain Tumbling media makes it so.  It doesn't wear out, get dirty or go away.  It just flat cleans.  Use it over and over indefinitely.  Since the factory that makes the stuff is within walkin' distance, I don't pay freight to get it.  The savings is passed along to my customers.

Ok, I'm off the stump now.  I dry my wet brass after separating it from the media with a french fry basket.  Then I put it into an onion bag and shake it out and hang it up to dry.  When I need brass to load, I have clean dry brass that's easy on the equipment.  My ammo slides thru my guns without a bobble.  Looks good on my belt too. . .

If you use the cat litter be sure to clean the cat t_ _ _s out of it as they tend to gum up the case mouths!!  ;D :o :D ;)

Seriously, D.D. is 100% dead on. Once you get over the initial outlay for ceramic media and a PROPER tumbler, e.g., Thumler's or Lortone, you will wonder why you were cleaning brass with Stone Age methodology before.  ;)  It's that great, especially for BP stained cases.  ;)

Deadeye Don

Ok so what size Lortone tumbler is good for brass?
