Hey..I was given a box of 500 LRN .45acp 230gr bullets and wanted to know if I could use them up un my 1858 .44 Reminton. I could lube the cyl like using ball, as they only have a narrow blue grease groove. The only problem i can see is that they are a heavier bullet. Anyone know how much powder it would take to push these at CAS speeds ?
Thanks

Howdy!

Are they soft or (more probably) hard cast?  (If soft, you can score them with your thumbnail, hard cast will resist all but the hardest finger/thumbnails.)

If they're soft, no problem.  You can shoot 'em with whatever charge will fit in the chamber, but about 20 grs. should do it.  That'll be a powerful load!

If they're hard, they're still shootable and safe, but you could break your loading rammer trying to seat them.  You could remove the cylinder and load them thataway - I'd use some lube over the ball: Crisco, home-made, whatever.

I'll second SHB's comments/advice.  Tried some .45 SWC's in 185 grain persuation in a 3rd Model Dragoon once.  They were hard cast and I almost bent my loading lever trying to seat them.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
