1860 R&M back straps
« on: September 04, 2007, 06:25:41 PM »
Found a 45LC, 5 1/2" barrel, stoeger import, R&M today at local gun shop priced at $400.00.
The price seemed OK from what I've seen.
My question is the gun has brass back strap and brass trigger gaurd, is the brass back strap corect for this gun?
And the brass trigger gaurd for that matter? Doc O

No. BS's were steel for Army size revolvers.

FCK
I did forget to say this gun is the 1860 R&M. So the brass back staps won't fly, right. Also what about the 45 LC cal? Way off base for cal. size. Doc O

Howdy Doc O,
Are you sure that's a Richards-Mason and not a '72 Opentop?  The reason I ask is that the R-M's have previously not been offered in 45LC, while the OT's have offered 45LC starting about a year ago.  Also, the 1860 R-M's previously were only offered with Army grips, with steel gripframes (and the 1851 R-M's were only offered with the brass gripframe and Navy grips).  Opentops have been available with either Army grips (7 1/2" barrel only) or Navy grips (any barrel length).  If it is indeed an 1860 R-M in 45LC with a Navy grip, then that is two new options for the gun.

Actually, Colts' first run of 1860 Army percussion revolvers (in 1860) had some brass backstraps, BUT they were NAVY grips AND had 7.5" barrels AND I believe the BS's were silver plated. I don't have the Wilson book anymore so I don't know how many were made but I'm thinking around 200. All 1860 Army conversions had steel BS's I think but I will will re-read McDowell's book sometime this week to be 100% sure. However, I believe all Uberti 1860 conversions have steel BS's nonetheless.

I've got a pair of , '72s so I know these were not them. They were defenitly RM's, round 1860's barrel, and 45 LC. And what threw me was the brass back strap. The brass trigger guard, Thats ok. I've looked in the books I have and haven't found any army RM's with the brass BS. These were imported by stoeger, so maybe they just put on a pair of navy grips becuase thats what they had handy.

Very interesting.  So it must have the rear sight on the hammer and a rebated cylinder, I take it?  Well, Uberti has been known to make "mistakes" and send them.  I know Cimarron has received a few.  You might have a unique gun there  ;D
